The Two-Update Lifetime Rule

UIDAI's current rules cap name changes at two per lifetime (and date of birth at one). Address updates stay unlimited; the name is what is rationed. Once both updates are spent, a further change moves into exception handling: a Seva Kendra request backed by strong legal proof, with UIDAI's regional office approving case by case, and the gazette notification is the document that carries that argument. The practical translation: your two updates are a budget. Spend the first only when the name is final, and try never to need the second.

Documents That Carry the Change

The name UIDAI writes is the name your proof shows. The workhorses:

• For spelling corrections: any UIDAI-accepted photo ID already carrying the correct spelling: passport, PAN, voter ID, driving licence.
• For the married surname: the registered marriage certificate. Certificates that clearly identify you (photograph, or old name linked to new) sail through fastest.
• For full name changes: the gazette notification, the strongest proof of identity on UIDAI's list, uploadable as the e-Gazette PDF and accepted at every Kendra.
• For minors: the birth certificate, with a parent's Aadhaar and presence.

UIDAI widened the accepted-document list in its 2026 amendment, but the logic is unchanged: bring one clean proof in the new name rather than a pile of conflicting ones.

The Seva Kendra Process in UP, Step by Step

1. Freeze the spelling, then book

   Check the new name letter by letter against the proof you will carry. Then book an appointment online or walk into an Aadhaar Seva Kendra; Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Agra, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Noida and every district headquarters have Kendras, and most tehsils have bank or post-office enrolment points, so no UP resident travels far for this.

2. Carry the proof and your Aadhaar

   The original proof of identity in the new name, plus your existing Aadhaar number. Photocopies help but originals are verified.

3. Form, biometrics, fee

   The operator fills the update, you authenticate with fingerprints or iris, and pay the small demographic-update fee at the counter. Keep the acknowledgement slip: its URN is your tracking number.

4. Track the URN

   Processing runs from days to a few weeks. The URN status is checkable online, and rejections come with a reason, usually a document or spelling issue.

5. Download the new e-Aadhaar

   Once approved, the updated e-Aadhaar downloads free and is fully valid. Then, and only then, move to PAN, bank and the rest, in the order on our process guide.

What Is Online, Honestly

UIDAI keeps adjusting what the myAadhaar portal allows, and headlines routinely overstate it. The stable truth: address updates run online; the name is stricter. A portal may let you start a request or upload the proof document, and simple correction cases have at times been processed online, but a name change should be planned as a Kendra visit, because biometric authentication in person is what completes it, and an online attempt after your limit is spent is auto-rejected anyway. Treat any "change your Aadhaar name fully online in 5 minutes" article as marketing, and treat the Kendra as the process.

The After-Marriage Shortcut

For brides adding or switching to the husband's surname, the marriage certificate alone is usually the whole story at the Kendra: no gazette, no ads, no affidavit. One caution from the limit rule: make the married name decision final before the Kendra visit, because a later second tweak spends your last lifetime update.

When the Gazette Comes First

Three cases send you to the gazette before any Kendra:

• A full name change: new first name or a completely new name. The gazette notification becomes the proof of identity UIDAI accepts without argument.
• Both lifetime updates spent: the exception route runs on strong legal proof, and the gazette is that proof.
• A deep mismatch: documents in genuinely different names, where one public record has to settle who you are everywhere.

Aadhaar vs Your Other Documents

Half of UP's name pain is not the Aadhaar record itself but the mismatch around it: Aadhaar says one spelling, the UP Board marksheet another, PAN a third. Fixing Aadhaar to match the majority of your documents is usually the cheap move; fixing a single odd document at its own office is the other; and a one-and-the-same-person affidavit bridges gaps while corrections process. What never works is leaving the mismatch alone: PAN linking, bank KYC, UP scholarship DBT credits and UPPSC or UPSSSC document verification all trip on it eventually.

Central Gazette First, Aadhaar Second: the Full Procedure

1. Begin with the notarised affidavit

   Old name, new name, address and reason on stamp paper. Because Aadhaar will later print whatever the gazette says, this wording is effectively you typing your future Aadhaar in advance.

2. Publish in a Hindi and an English paper

   Both advertisements carry the two names and your address; keep the entire original pages. The Department matches the publication dates and editions before anything else in the file.

3. Assemble the proforma, witnesses and CD

   “I hitherto known as…”, computer-typed, your signature plus two witnesses with details, the CD in the prescribed format and its signed printout. Unsigned CDs sit near the top of the rejection list.

4. Clear the BharatKosh challan

   Rs 1,100 for an adult (Rs 1,700 for a minor through a guardian, Rs 250 more for an alias line), receipt saved. Nothing else is a government fee, whatever a shop’s quotation claims.

5. Post the complete file to the Department of Publication

   Civil Lines, New Delhi, by courier from any UP district: affidavit, newspapers, proforma, CD and printout, ID and address proof, photos, receipt. No counter visit exists in this process.

6. Collect the notification and walk into the Seva Kendra

   25 to 45 days later it publishes in Part IV on egazette.gov.in, downloads free, and the Seva Kendra update on its strength is the smoothest Aadhaar appointment you will ever have.

Gazette Fees, Time and the File

What goes in the courier: notarised affidavit, the two full newspaper pages, the signed proforma with two witnesses’ details, the CD and its signed printout, identity and address proof, fresh photographs, and the fee receipt.

• Check how many name updates your Aadhaar has already spent; the gazette is precisely what unlocks the update the Kendra would otherwise refuse.
