These are paid online only, on bharatkosh.gov.in, by you, and the receipt travels with your file. No demand draft, no cash, no CD; those rules are dead. If a consultant offers to "pay the government fee for you", insist on seeing the BharatKosh receipt in your name anyway; it is your proof of what the government actually charged.

The Honest Do-It-Yourself Total

Yes, you can do the whole thing yourself, and here is what it honestly costs an adult in UP: Rs 100 stamp paper, Rs 50 to 400 notary, Rs 600 to 1,500 for both ads on budget dailies, Rs 1,100 to the government, plus courier and copies. • Two-city complications: if you have moved recently, matching the address across documents may need fresh proofs, not fees.

The Fee-Padding Trick, Exposed

Here is how the "Rs 3,000 to 5,000 government fee" quote is built: take the real Rs 1,100, silently add the seller's margin, the ad commissions and a cushion, and present the total as "government charges". The tell is simple: ask for the BharatKosh receipt. The receipt shows exactly what the government took, in your name, and no honest service hesitates to show it. Our rule across this site is the same everywhere: the government fee and our fee are two separate, visible numbers, and the newspaper charges are shared before booking, not discovered after.

When You Should Not Spend at All

Some cases need no gazette and nearly no money, and we say so on the first call:

• Aadhaar surname after marriage: the marriage certificate alone often does it at the Seva Kendra. No gazette, no ads.
• A birth certificate spelling error: the local Registrar corrects it under Section 15 of the RBD Act, through the Nagar Nigam or panchayat route.
• A single wrong marksheet: the board's own correction route, not a name change.
• A date of birth problem: never a gazette matter at any price; the board, the Registrar or a court handles it.

What Each of the Six Steps Costs

1. Swear the affidavit

   Notarised on stamp paper with the old name, the new name, your address and the reason. Rs 100 to 500, and its exact wording rules everything that follows.

2. Publish two newspaper advertisements

   One Hindi daily of your district (Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala or Hindustan) and one English paper, complete original pages preserved.

3. Prepare the proforma and CD

   The typed “I hitherto known as” declaration signed by you and two witnesses, plus the CD in the prescribed format with a signed printout.

4. Pay the fee on BharatKosh

   Rs 1,100 for an adult, Rs 1,700 for a minor through a guardian, Rs 250 more for an alias line, with the e-receipt saved.

5. Courier the file to the Department of Publication

   Civil Lines, New Delhi, with photo ID, address proof and photographs. No office visit exists anywhere in this process.

6. Download from Part IV and update

   Publication in 25 to 45 days, free from egazette.gov.in, then Aadhaar, PAN, bank, passport and the certificate family in that order.
