The Gazette of India is the government's official journal, and Part IV is the section where private individuals' notices appear. Your entry is a few lines of standard text: that you, known till now as [Old Name], son/daughter/wife of [Parent/Husband], resident of [address in UP], have changed your name to [New Name]. Once that entry prints in a Saturday issue, your name change carries the government's own record behind it. That is why the strictest offices, the passport office above all, ask for the gazette and relax once they see it: they are not trusting your affidavit, they are reading the government's journal.

Fees and Honest Timelines

Every other rupee, the stamp paper, the ads, the courier and the honest do-it-yourself total, is itemised on the name change cost page. There is no tatkal at any price, and anyone promising a 7-day gazette is not describing this process.

Checking Your Gazette Status From UP

There is no status portal, application number login or SMS alert, and you do not need one. Part IV publishes every Saturday, and every issue goes up on egazette.gov.in, searchable free. From the fourth week after your file reaches Delhi, search your name in each new Saturday issue. When your entry appears, you are done. We do this weekly watching for every client and send the link the day the name appears.

Downloading Your Copy, Free

Hard copies stopped on 1 October 2015, so nobody receives a printed gazette by post anymore, and nobody should charge you for a "copy". Search the issue on egazette.gov.in, download the PDF, and that file is your official proof: valid as downloaded, no certification, no stamp, no attestation from anyone. Save it in three places, because you will submit it to Aadhaar, PAN, the passport office and your bank, in that order.

Why Gazette Files Get Rejected

Files come back from Delhi for boringly consistent reasons. The top five from real filing experience:

• Signatures in the new name. You and both witnesses sign in the old name, everywhere, until publication.
• Newspaper clippings instead of complete original pages, masthead and date visible.
• A stale file: the affidavit or ads crossed one year old before submission.
• Spelling mismatches between the affidavit, the ads, the proforma and your ID, even by one letter.
• Payment problems: the wrong BharatKosh purpose head, or a missing receipt in the file.
