This is the last link in the education chain and the one with the least reliable information online, because universities are autonomous. Lucknow University, AKTU, CSJMU, BHU, AMU and CCSU each publish their own correction procedures, forms and fees, and those change. A page claiming one universal process for all of them is either out of date or making it up. So this page does something more useful: it explains the part that is identical everywhere, which is where the name came from and what it touches, and then shows you how to find your own university's rule quickly rather than guessing.

Where the Degree Name Came From

Read the chain and the sequencing problem becomes obvious. Nobody at your university invented the spelling on your degree; they copied it from the certificate you produced at admission. So a correction applied at the top of the chain, the school record, flows naturally downward, while a correction applied only at the bottom leaves an inconsistency between your degree and the marksheet it was built from. That sequence also makes the university's job easy: you are not asking them to judge who you are, you are showing them a corrected school certificate and asking them to match it.

A Degree Is Five Documents, Not One

Applicants routinely correct the degree and stop, which leaves four documents still carrying the old name and a verification problem waiting. When you apply, state which documents are to be corrected rather than assuming the university will infer it, and ask specifically about the transcript if any foreign application is possible, because credential evaluators compare names across everything you send. Whether each is reissued in one application or several is exactly the kind of thing your university decides for itself, which is the next section.

How to Find Your University's Rule

1. Start at your college, not the university

   The examination cell of the college you attended deals with these regularly and knows the current form, fee and route. Going straight to the university often sends you back anyway.

2. Ask for three things in writing

   The prescribed application form, the fee, and the exact document list. A written answer protects you if practice differs from what you are told verbally.

3. Ask whether a time limit applies

   Some universities set a period from the date of the degree, some do not. This is the single question that changes urgency, so ask it explicitly rather than assuming.

4. Check the university's own published pages

   Examination or student services sections usually carry the current notification. Print or save what you find, with the date.

5. Confirm which documents the application covers

   Degree only, or the full set including semester marksheets, provisional certificate, migration and transcript.

6. Submit with the corrected school certificate attached

   Your corrected Class 12 marksheet is the strongest thing in the file, because it makes the request a matching exercise rather than a judgement.

Universities in Uttar Pradesh that produce most of these enquiries are Lucknow University, AKTU, CSJMU Kanpur, BHU, AMU and CCSU Meerut, along with the many affiliated colleges under them. Affiliation matters: if you studied at an affiliated college, your route almost always begins there rather than at the parent university.

Before Convocation and After

Timing changes the difficulty of this more than anything else, and students who notice an error early often do not realise how much easier their position is.

So if you are still studying, or your convocation has not happened, treat a wrong name as urgent rather than something to deal with after graduation. Check the spelling on your enrolment record and semester marksheets in the first year, because those are printed long before the degree and they are your early warning. And if your Class 12 marksheet is also wrong, that correction takes months, which is a further argument for starting while you are still a student rather than in the week before a job offer.

Why Universities Ask for a Gazette

Universities ask for a gazette notification more readily than school boards do, and it is worth understanding why rather than resenting it. A school board is correcting an entry it made from its own register, so its own records settle the question. A university is often being asked about a name that differs from the school certificate it holds on file, which is a different situation: it has a document saying one thing and a person saying another. A published notification resolves that without the university having to weigh your claim.

The practical consequence is the same too: if you are going to need a gazette, publish it before applying to the university, because adding it to a pending application usually means starting again.

Professional Councils and Registrations

• Medical, dental and nursing registers: registration is held under the name on your degree, so a correction has to travel from the university to the council afterwards, in that order.
• Bar enrolment: the State Bar Council holds your enrolment details, and a correction there follows the university's corrected documents.
• Chartered accountancy and company secretaryship: institute membership records carry your name independently and need their own application.
• Engineering and architecture: where a council registration exists, it follows the degree rather than replacing it.
• Employers and PSU service records: these copy from whatever you submitted at joining, so they need updating separately once the degree is corrected.

The ordering rule across all of them is the same as everywhere else on this site: fix the source, then work downward. A council will not correct its register against a degree that still carries the old name, so the university has to be first.

Central Gazette Name Change: Step by Step

1. Swear the affidavit

   Notarised on stamp paper with the name on your degree, the name you will use, your address and the reason, in your own district.

2. Publish two newspaper advertisements

   One Hindi daily of your district (Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala or Hindustan) and one English paper, complete original pages kept flat.

3. Type the proforma and prepare the CD

   Two typed copies with two witnesses giving their signature, full name and address, and the CD carrying the declaration as typed Word text.

4. Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh

   Before dispatch, with the printed receipt going into the envelope as an enclosure.

5. Courier the file to Civil Lines

   Tracked dispatch to the Department of Publication, Delhi 110054, with your phone and email on the covering letter.

6. Download and apply to the university

   Publication in 25 to 45 days, free download, prints made, and the notification enclosed with the university application.

One Gazette, Several Institutions

A degree correction is usually the point where a gazette earns its fee, because unlike a single marksheet it has to satisfy several bodies in sequence.

Print several copies of the notification, because each institution retains one, as our download guide explains. And keep the whole issue PDF as your master, since a transcript or credential evaluation months later may want the complete document rather than a two-page extract.

Gazette Fees, Time and the File

The Department's checklist in one line: covering letter with phone and email, affidavit (notarised), newspapers (both, original, whole pages), proforma (typed, two copies, applicant plus two witnesses), CD with signed declaration, photo ID, address proof, photographs, BharatKosh receipt.

Before You Apply: Check These

• Confirm whether your Class 12 marksheet is correct, because that answer decides whether the university is step one or step two.
• Ask your college for the form, fee, document list and any time limit, in writing, rather than relying on a verbal account.
• List every document you want reissued, including the transcript if foreign study is possible.
• If a gazette will be needed, publish before applying rather than adding it to a pending file.

After the Gazette: What Updates Next

Once the university reissues, the chain continues outward: any professional council registration, then your employer's service record and provident fund entry, then the ordinary counter order beginning with Aadhaar. Keep the surrendered documents' photocopies alongside the reissued originals and the gazette, because a credential evaluation or a foreign employer will sometimes ask to see how the two names connect rather than accepting the corrected set alone.
