Quick answer: Correct Class 10 first. Your High School record is the source the Board carries forward, so an Intermediate correction made while Class 10 still carries the error produces a document that disagrees with its own origin, and verification desks notice. Then remember the count: a full correction is four documents, not two, because each class has a marksheet and a certificate. Where only Class 12 is wrong, the case is easier than most people expect, since your Class 10 record becomes the proof.
The general UP Board process, the portals, the Principal's submission, the DIOS countersignature and the fee, is set out on our main correction guide. This page covers the part that guide deliberately leaves out: what changes between the two classes. It matters because most people treat their marksheets as two separate items of equal standing, apply for whichever one is causing a problem today, and discover months later that they have created a new inconsistency instead of removing one.
Class 10 and Class 12 at a Glance
| The source record | Class 10, from which name and date of birth are carried forward |
| If both are wrong | Correct Class 10 first, then Class 12 |
| If only Class 12 is wrong | Easier: Class 10 is itself the proof |
| If only Class 10 is wrong | Unusual; check Class 12 carefully before assuming it is right |
| How many documents | Four: marksheet and certificate for each class |
| Fee | Charged per application, so two classes means two applications |
| Same chain both times | School, Principal, DIOS, Board |
| Date of birth | Separate matter, with a hard three-year limit |
Key Takeaways
- Class 10 is the source record, so correcting Class 12 first leaves the corrected document disagreeing with the record it came from.
- Each class produces two documents, a marksheet and a certificate, and applicants routinely correct the marksheet and forget the certificate.
- Where only Class 12 carries the error, your existing Class 10 record is strong proof and the case is comparatively light.
- Two classes means two applications and two fees, so plan for both rather than discovering the second halfway.
- Employers and universities usually ask for both classes, which is why leaving one uncorrected defeats the purpose of correcting the other.
Which Case Are You: Quick Facts
| Both classes wrong | Two applications, Class 10 first, both through the school |
| Only Class 12 wrong | One application, with Class 10 attached as proof |
| Only Class 10 wrong | Check Class 12 again; if genuinely correct, one application |
| Marksheet right, certificate wrong | Still an application; the certificate is a separate printed document |
| Different errors in each class | Two applications, each stating its own error |
| Father's name wrong in both | Same ordering rule applies |
| Fee | Around Rs 1,000 per name correction application |
| Timeline | Roughly 30 working days per application at the Board stage |

Why Class 10 Is the Source Record
When you were enrolled for the High School examination, your school entered your name and date of birth from its own admission and scholar registers into the Board's records. Those details then became the Board's entry for you, and when you were registered for the Intermediate examination two years later, they were carried forward rather than re-collected. That is why an error in your Class 12 documents is so often an inherited error rather than a fresh one: nobody mistyped it in Class 12, it arrived that way from Class 10.
Two consequences follow. First, correcting Class 10 usually resolves the reason the error exists at all, rather than the symptom. Second, if your school's own register carries the error, that is where the chain actually begins, which is why the Principal's verification step exists and why the school-side entry gets corrected as part of the same exercise.
The Order, and What Happens If You Reverse It
| What you do | What you end up with |
|---|---|
| Class 10 corrected, then Class 12 | A consistent chain: source corrected, everything downstream agrees |
| Class 12 corrected, Class 10 left | A corrected Intermediate document that disagrees with the High School record it came from |
| Both applied together | Workable where the school files them in sequence; ask specifically for that |
| Class 12 corrected, Class 10 attempted later | Often harder, because the Board now holds two versions of you |
The second row is the expensive one and it happens for an understandable reason: a job application or an admission is asking for Class 12 today, so that is the one people fix. The trouble arrives later, at a verification desk that pulls both. A verifier comparing a corrected Class 12 against an uncorrected Class 10 does not see a partial fix in progress; they see two documents that disagree, which is the exact problem you were trying to remove. If a deadline genuinely forces the Class 12 correction first, apply for Class 10 in the same visit rather than afterwards.
Four Documents, Not Two
This catches almost everybody. Each Board examination produces two printed documents: the marksheet, showing your subjects and marks, and the certificate, which is the formal record of having passed. They are separate physical documents with the name printed on each, and correcting one does not correct the other automatically.
The reason it matters is that the two get used in different places. Marksheets go to admissions and employers who want marks. Certificates go to verification, government recruitment and anywhere proof of qualification rather than performance is wanted. Correct only the marksheet and the problem simply resurfaces at the desk that asks for the certificate. When you apply, state clearly that both the marksheet and the certificate are to be corrected, and check what the school has actually requested before it submits.
When Only Class 12 Is Wrong
The good news case, and more common than people assume: your High School documents are correct, and the error appears only on the Intermediate ones. That usually means the mistake was introduced at the Class 12 registration stage rather than inherited, which makes it a clean correction rather than anything heavier. Your proof is unusually strong here, because you hold a Board-issued document from the same Board carrying the correct name. Attach the Class 10 marksheet and certificate to the application, alongside Aadhaar and the birth certificate, and the case largely argues itself.
One caution worth taking seriously. Before concluding that only Class 12 is wrong, read the Class 10 documents carefully rather than from memory, including the father's and mother's names, the spelling arrangement and any middle name. People correct Class 12 to match a Class 10 they have not actually looked at in a decade, and then discover the two were never the same.
One Corrected, One Not: What a Verifier Sees
This is the question that fills forum threads, phrased as: my 12th is corrected, will the old 10th cause a problem? The honest answer is that it depends entirely on who is looking, and the pattern is predictable.
- Ordinary employers: often ask only for Class 12 or the degree, and may never notice.
- Universities and admissions: ask for both classes routinely, so the mismatch appears immediately.
- Government recruitment and verification: pull the full academic record and compare it against your identity documents; this is where it stops.
- Passport and background checks: compare names across everything you submit, so an inconsistent academic chain invites questions.
So the practical rule: if your future involves any government recruitment, higher education or verification of any kind, correct both. If it genuinely does not, an uncorrected Class 10 may never surface, but you are carrying a known inconsistency rather than a resolved one, and the correction does not get cheaper with time.
Applying for Both, Practically
Read all four documents before deciding anything
Class 10 marksheet and certificate, Class 12 marksheet and certificate, checking your name, your parents' names and the spelling arrangement on each. Note exactly what each says.
Fix Aadhaar first if it is also wrong
The Board aligns its record to your identity documents, so those need to be right before either application is made. Our Aadhaar guide covers it.
Apply at the school for Class 10 first
Written application to the Principal with the full document set, asking for both the marksheet and the certificate to be corrected. Keep a stamped copy.
Ask for the Class 12 application in the same visit
Sequenced after Class 10 rather than months later, so the school files both while your file is open and your documents are already with them.
Track both application numbers separately
Two applications, two numbers, two fees of around Rs 1,000 each. Note which portal each was filed on.
Collect all four corrected documents
And check them at the counter before leaving, because a corrected document carrying a new error is worse than the original one.
Central Gazette Name Change: Step by Step
Our core service: where your case is a change rather than a correction, both class applications will want the gazette as an enclosure, so it is published once and used twice.
Swear the affidavit
Notarised on stamp paper with the name on the marksheets, the name you will use, your address and the reason, in your own district.
Publish two newspaper advertisements
One Hindi daily of your district (Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala or Hindustan) and one English paper, complete original pages kept flat.
Type the proforma and prepare the CD
Two typed copies with two witnesses giving their signature, full name and address, and the CD carrying the declaration as typed Word text.
Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh
Before dispatch, with the printed receipt going into the envelope as an enclosure.
Courier the file to Civil Lines
Tracked dispatch to the Department of Publication, Delhi 110054, with your phone and email on the covering letter.
Download and take prints to the school
Publication in 25 to 45 days, free download, and prints for both class applications rather than one.
One Gazette, Two Applications
A detail that saves money and confuses people: you do not need a separate gazette notification for each class. One published notification covers your name, and copies of it go into both the Class 10 and the Class 12 file.
The distinction is between the gazette fee, which is a one-time publication charge, and the Board fee, which is charged per correction application. Anyone quoting you two gazette fees for two marksheets is either mistaken or overcharging. Print three or four copies of the notification, since the school retains one per application, as our download guide explains.
Gazette Fees, Time and the File
| Board correction fee | Around Rs 1,000 per application, so twice for two classes |
| Affidavit | Rs 100 to 500 including stamp paper and notary |
| Adult gazette fee | Rs 1,100 once, covering both applications |
| Newspaper advertisements | A few hundred rupees per paper, edition-dependent |
| Publication window | 25 to 45 days after the Department receives the file |
| Board processing | Roughly 30 working days per application |
| Our service | Basic from Rs 999, Complete from Rs 1,999, quoted separately |
The Department's checklist in one line: covering letter with phone and email, affidavit (notarised), newspapers (both, original, whole pages), proforma (typed, two copies, applicant plus two witnesses), CD with signed declaration, photo ID, address proof, photographs, BharatKosh receipt.
Before You Apply: Check These
- Read all four documents first, rather than trusting your memory of what Class 10 says.
- Apply for Class 10 before Class 12, and if a deadline forces the reverse, file both in the same visit.
- State explicitly that both the marksheet and the certificate are to be corrected for each class.
- If a gazette is needed, publish once and print several copies, because each application retains one.
After the Gazette: What Updates Next
With both classes corrected, the rest of the education chain follows: the university degree, then any professional registration or council record. Outside education, the ordinary counter order applies. Keep the superseded documents rather than discarding them, because a verifier occasionally wants to see the old and new side by side with the gazette explaining the link.
What Other Websites Get Wrong
- Wrong: correct whichever marksheet is causing trouble today. Right: Class 10 is the source, so correcting Class 12 alone creates a fresh inconsistency.
- Wrong: a marksheet correction fixes the certificate too. Right: they are separate printed documents and both must be requested.
- Wrong: two marksheets mean two gazette notifications. Right: one publication covers both; only the Board fee repeats.
- Wrong: nobody checks the old Class 10. Right: universities, government recruitment and verification desks pull both routinely.
- Wrong: the same application can fix a date of birth. Right: date of birth carries a hard three-year limit and is separate.

Why We Ask for All Four Documents
The first thing we ask a marksheet client for is photographs of every board document they hold, and there is a reason. Roughly half the time the case they describe is not the case they have: the Class 10 they believed was correct is not, or the certificate carries a different arrangement from the marksheet. Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, has read a great many of these.
- We compare all four before advising: because the ordering decision depends on what each document actually says.
- We plan both applications together: so the school files them in sequence rather than months apart.
- We make sure the certificate is included: the item most often left out of a correction request.
- One gazette, not two: if publication is needed, it happens once and serves both files.

Class 10 and Class 12 Corrections: FAQs
Which class should I correct first?
Class 10, because it is the source record. Your Intermediate name and date of birth were carried forward from your High School entry, so correcting Class 12 while Class 10 still carries the error leaves the corrected document disagreeing with its own origin.
How many documents does a full correction involve?
Four: a marksheet and a certificate for each class. They are separate printed documents, and correcting the marksheet does not correct the certificate automatically.
Only my Class 12 is wrong. Is that easier?
Yes, considerably. The error was introduced at Intermediate registration rather than inherited, and your correct Class 10 documents, issued by the same Board, are strong proof. Attach them to the application.
Do I need two gazette notifications for two marksheets?
No. One publication covers your name, and copies of the same notification go into both applications. Only the Board's correction fee repeats, at around Rs 1,000 per application.
What does correcting both classes cost?
Around Rs 1,000 per application, so roughly Rs 2,000 to the Board, plus the affidavit. If a gazette is needed, add Rs 1,100 once and the newspaper insertions once.
My 12th is corrected but my 10th is not. Will it cause a problem?
It depends who is looking. Ordinary employers may never ask for Class 10. Universities, government recruitment and verification desks pull both routinely, and there the mismatch stops the file.
Can both applications be filed together?
Usually yes, and it is worth asking the school to sequence them, Class 10 first. Filing in the same visit avoids a second trip and keeps your document set with the school while the file is open.
Should I correct the certificate too, or just the marksheet?
Both. Marksheets go to admissions and employers who want marks; certificates go to verification and government recruitment. Correcting one leaves the problem waiting at the desk that asks for the other.
I assumed my Class 10 was correct. Should I check?
Yes, read it rather than remembering it, including your parents' names and the spelling arrangement. People correct Class 12 to match a Class 10 they have not looked at in a decade and find the two were never identical.
Does the process differ between the two classes?
No. Both run the same chain: application through the school, Principal verification, portal submission, DIOS countersignature, then the Board. What differs is only which record is the source.
Can I fix my date of birth in the same application?
No. Date of birth carries a hard three-year limit from passing and is handled separately, so do not assume a name correction application will carry it.
What if the error is in my father's name rather than mine?
The same ordering rule applies: Class 10 first, then Class 12, and both the marksheet and the certificate in each case.

Facts on this page are checked against these sources and our own filing experience. Fees and portal routes are revised from time to time; the source-record ordering and the four-document count are the stable core.
The Short Version
Class 10 is the source record and Class 12 copies from it, so correct Class 10 first or your corrected Intermediate document will disagree with its own origin. A full correction is four documents, a marksheet and a certificate for each class, and applicants routinely fix the marksheet and forget the certificate that verification desks actually ask for. Where only Class 12 is wrong, the case is light, because your Class 10 documents from the same Board are the proof. Two classes means two applications and two Board fees of around Rs 1,000, but only one gazette if publication is needed. Read all four documents before deciding anything, because the Class 10 you remember may not be the Class 10 you hold. WhatsApp photographs of all four to 9540005002.
