The Honest Online Guide

Name Change Online in Uttar Pradesh

Yes, you can complete a name change in Uttar Pradesh from home, and no, it is not "100% online" the way many websites claim. This page maps every step honestly: what happens on a screen, what happens on paper, the one envelope you must post, and the government portal that other sites describe but which does not exist.

Quick answer: A name change in Uttar Pradesh can be done from home with zero office visits, but not with zero paper. The ads, the Rs 1,100 fee, the tracking and the final download are all online. The application itself is a paper file you post to Delhi, and there is no government portal, login or online form for it.

When people search name change online, they picture a government website with a form, an upload button and a status bar. That website does not exist for this process, and the sites describing it are describing their own lead forms. What does exist is almost as good: a process designed so that every step happens from your home in Uttar Pradesh, with one notary visit in your own market and one envelope at your local post office. This page maps it honestly, step by step.

The Portal That Does Not Exist

Several high-ranking pages tell you to "go to the gazette portal, register with your email, create a password, and fill the online name change application form." Read that carefully, because no such system exists. There is no account to create, no application form to fill online, and no upload button anywhere in this process. egazette.gov.in, the only real gazette website, is a library: you search and download published gazettes there, nothing more. When a private website shows you an "online application form" for a name change, you are filling their lead form, not a government application, and your documents are going to their office, not to the government.

Data caution: before typing your Aadhaar number into any "name change application portal", ask one question: which government department runs this website? For this process, the honest answer is always none.

What "Online Name Change Services" Really Are

Every online name change service, including us, is a documentation consultancy: humans who draft your papers correctly, arrange the ads, guide the payment and track the publication, over phone and WhatsApp. That is a real, useful service; it is how this site earns its keep. The difference worth paying attention to is honesty about the last mile. We tell you plainly that the file goes by post, in your name, because agents are barred from submitting. A service that promises to "submit online for you" or "handle everything, you do nothing" is promising something the process does not allow, and that tells you how the rest of their promises work.

The Two Physical Moments

✍️

The Notary

Ten minutes in your own market or court compound. The affidavit is signed and sealed in person; no notary works by email.

✉️

The Envelope

One speed post or courier from your local post office to Delhi 110054, in your own name. Keep the receipt; it is your tracking anchor.

🚫

Not Needed: Any Office

No gazette office, no tehsil counter, no Delhi trip. Nobody in this process ever sees you in person except the notary.

📱

Everything Else

Drafts, checks, ad bookings, payment, tracking and download all happen on your phone.

Doing It Maximally Online, From Home

  1. Send your documents on WhatsApp

Photos of your ID and the relevant papers to 9540005002. Spellings get checked letter by letter before anything is drafted.

  2. Approve the affidavit draft, then one notary visit

The checked affidavit arrives as a file. Print on Rs 100 stamp paper, sign before your local notary in the old name.

  3. Ads booked remotely, full pages kept

Both newspaper ads are booked by phone, proofread before print, and you keep the complete original pages.

  4. Pay on BharatKosh and assemble the file

Rs 1,100 online, receipt printed, and the 9-item file assembled and photographed page by page.

  5. Post it, then track Saturdays till download

One envelope to Delhi in your own name. Then Part IV every Saturday on egazette.gov.in until your notification appears, downloaded free.

After the Gazette: Online or Not, Office by Office

UpdateHow online is it, honestly
AadhaarAppointment online; the name change itself needs a Seva Kendra visit, and only two are allowed in a lifetime
PANFully online correction through Protean or UTIITSL; the PAN number never changes
PassportApplication online; the reissue still means a PSK visit, and a new passport number
Voter IDForm 8 online through NVSP or the Voter Helpline app
Driving licenceParivahan Sarathi online for your UP RTO
BankNo Indian bank finishes this online; one branch visit for signature verification

The right order, and why it matters, is on the process guide: Aadhaar, then PAN, then passport, then bank.

What Other Websites Get Wrong About "Online"

Every guide here is part of one connected map, so whichever counter your case lands at next, the page for it already exists:

Which of These Six Steps Are Actually Online

Our core service: Two steps happen on a screen, two need your physical presence, and two are postal. The route:

  1. Swear the affidavit

Notarised on stamp paper with the old name, the new name, your address and the reason. Rs 100 to 500, and its exact wording rules everything that follows.

  2. Publish two newspaper advertisements

One Hindi daily of your district (Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala or Hindustan) and one English paper, complete original pages preserved.

  3. Prepare the proforma and CD

The typed “I hitherto known as” declaration signed by you and two witnesses, plus the CD in the prescribed format with a signed printout.

  4. Pay the fee on BharatKosh

Rs 1,100 for an adult, Rs 1,700 for a minor through a guardian, Rs 250 more for an alias line, with the e-receipt saved.

  5. Courier the file to the Department of Publication

Civil Lines, New Delhi, with photo ID, address proof and photographs. No office visit exists anywhere in this process.

  6. Download from Part IV and update

Publication in 25 to 45 days, free from egazette.gov.in, then Aadhaar, PAN, bank, passport and the certificate family in that order.

The full route, Central versus State, rejection causes and tracking, sits on our gazette pillar.

Name Change Online in UP: FAQs

Can I change my name completely online in Uttar Pradesh?

From home, yes; completely online, no. The ads, the fee, the tracking and the download are online. The affidavit needs one notary visit, and the application itself is a paper file posted to Delhi. There is no government website where you apply.

Is there an official portal to apply for a name change?

No. egazette.gov.in only publishes and lets you download gazettes. Any "online application form" you see belongs to a private service, and filling it sends your details to them, not to the government.

What parts of the process are genuinely online?

Booking both newspaper ads, paying the Rs 1,100 fee on bharatkosh.gov.in, tracking the weekly Part IV issues, and downloading the published gazette free. That is most of the process by effort, just not the submission itself.

Do I ever have to visit a government office?

No, not once, in UP or in Delhi. The only in-person moments are your local notary for the affidavit and your post office for the envelope.

Can an online service submit the file for me?

No. Agents are barred from submitting; the file goes by post in your own name. A genuine service prepares and checks everything and then guides your posting. A service promising to submit for you is promising a rule violation.

How do I track my name change online?

Part IV of the Gazette of India publishes every Saturday. Search each week's issue on egazette.gov.in for your name; when it appears, download the PDF free. We do this watching for our clients as part of the service.

Is the downloaded gazette copy legally valid?

Yes, exactly as downloaded. Hard copies stopped on 1 October 2015, the download is free, and no certification or stamp is needed on it.

Can I do the name change through UP e-District or eSathi?

No. Those portals handle certificates like caste, domicile and income. A personal name change runs through the Central Gazette's postal route, not through any UP portal.

Which document updates after the gazette are online?

PAN, voter ID and driving licence updates run online. Aadhaar needs a Seva Kendra visit after online booking, passports need a PSK visit after the online application, and banks need one branch visit.

Why do websites claim the online process takes 8 to 15 days?

Because it sells. The Gazette of India publishes name change notifications 30 to 45 days after the file reaches Delhi, and no way of preparing the file changes the government's timeline.

The Short Version

From home: yes. One click: no. The ads, the Rs 1,100 BharatKosh fee, the Saturday tracking and the free download are online. The affidavit takes one notary visit, the proforma is typed at home, and the file goes to Delhi by post in your own name, because no government portal, login or online form exists for this, whatever other websites describe. After publication, PAN, voter ID and DL update online; Aadhaar, passport and bank still want to see you once. We run the whole journey with you on WhatsApp. Call 9540003316.

From Home Is Real. "One Click" Is Not.

We run the whole process with you on WhatsApp: drafts, ads, payment, posting guidance and tracking, till the download.
