Quick answer: Find your situation first, because the route follows from it. A newly married woman needs the marriage certificate, an affidavit and a few weeks of counter visits, and nothing more. A working woman whose degrees carry her maiden name leaves those certificates alone and updates only her current records. A recruitment or passport case needs the gazette filed at the start rather than discovered halfway. A woman married many years can still register the marriage and change everything. And a woman with half-changed records should finish the round rather than reverse it. Most of these cost Rs 100 to 500 plus time; only two need the Rs 1,100 gazette.
The reason general advice fails married women is that it assumes one of them: a bride, newly married, with straightforward documents and no deadline. Real enquiries look nothing like that. They come from a teacher whose service book says one thing and her bank another, from a candidate whose recruitment portal has rejected an upload, from a woman whose marriage was never registered in 2009, and from someone leaving for a visa appointment in eleven weeks. This page is organised the way those calls actually arrive, and each situation ends with the same three things: the route, the honest cost and the first step.
Six Situations at a Glance
| Newly married | Certificate route; affidavit, then Aadhaar, PAN, bank |
| Working woman with maiden-name qualifications | Certificate route; degrees stay as issued |
| Government recruitment or exam candidate | Gazette from the start, filed before the deadline |
| Passport or visa ahead | Gazette, planned backwards from the appointment |
| Married years ago, nothing updated | Register the marriage first, then the ordinary round |
| Half-changed records | Finish the round; do not reverse anything |
| Typical cost, no gazette | Certificate copies plus Rs 100 to 500 for the affidavit |
| Typical cost, with gazette | Add Rs 1,100 government fee and the newspaper insertions |
Key Takeaways
- Four of the six situations need no gazette at all, which is why the first question is always which one you are in rather than how to file.
- Educational certificates are not changed; they stay as issued, and the marriage certificate explains the link between the names.
- A recruitment or passport deadline changes everything: file the gazette at the start, because discovering it later means running every counter twice.
- A marriage from years ago can still be registered, and that registration is usually the cheapest way to unlock the whole round.
- Half-changed records are the commonest paid case we handle, and the fix is always forwards rather than backwards.

- FAQs
1. Newly Married
The straightforward case, and the cheapest. Register the marriage if it is not already registered, collect three certified copies, swear an affidavit, and run the counters in dependency order: Aadhaar, PAN, bank and employer together, and the rest afterwards. No gazette, no newspaper advertisements, no Rs 1,100.
One decision to make before you start rather than during: the exact final arrangement of your name, including whether your maiden name stays as a middle name. Write it identically on every form from the first one. Our update order guide gives the sequence.
2. Working Woman With Maiden-Name Qualifications
The question behind this one is usually unspoken: do I have to change my degrees? No. Educational certificates stay as issued, and that is correct rather than a compromise. A Class 10 marksheet records what was true when it was issued, and universities do not rewrite history because a graduate married. What you update are your current records: Aadhaar, PAN, bank, employer, PF and payroll. The bridge between the two sets is your marriage certificate, and keeping it filed with your certificates means the connection is always one document away.
Two practical notes for professional women. If your professional registration or licence sits under your maiden name, check whether the council has its own name change procedure, because several publish their own affidavit format. And if your published work, professional reputation or client relationships run under the maiden name, keeping that name is a completely legitimate choice, as our is it compulsory page sets out.
3. Government Recruitment or Exam Candidate
This is where the gazette genuinely earns its fee, and where getting the sequence wrong is expensive. Central recruitment bodies read central records, so a marriage certificate that satisfies your bank may not satisfy a verification desk that has been told to see a gazette notification. If a recruitment, a document verification round or a joining is anywhere ahead, file the gazette first, before touching any counter.
| Situation | Do this |
|---|---|
| Application form not yet submitted | File the gazette now; apply in whichever name will be consistent by the verification date |
| Applied in maiden name, verification ahead | Usually safest to keep everything in the maiden name through verification, then change afterwards |
| Selected, joining ahead | Gazette immediately, and tell the department the notification is coming |
| Already in service | The service book route applies alongside; intimate your department early |
The second row deserves emphasis because it is counter-intuitive: if you have already applied in your maiden name, changing mid-process usually creates more work than it saves. A verification desk comparing your application against your documents wants them to agree, and the cleanest way to achieve that is to leave both alone until the process closes.
4. Passport or Visa Ahead
Two facts decide this case. The passport is the strictest reader of names and the longest leg, because police verification happens at your registered address. So a fixed date, whether a visa interview, a flight or a joining abroad, has to be planned backwards from rather than chased.
If your date is closer than that, the honest advice is not to buy a faster service, because none exists. Instead check whether your case genuinely needs a gazette at all: many passport files accept the marriage certificate and affidavit, and the four exceptions are listed on our marriage certificate page. Our passport guide covers the annexures and what to carry.
5. Married Years Ago, Nothing Updated
Common in Uttar Pradesh and entirely fixable. A woman married in 2009 whose marriage was never registered, who still uses her maiden name on every document, is not in a difficult position; she is simply at the start of the process rather than the middle. The route is: register the marriage now, with the wedding card, ceremony photographs and witnesses who actually attended, then take the ordinary round. Late registration carries a penalty for the delay, and it is usually the cheapest way to unlock everything else, because the certificate then does the work at every counter.
Where registration is genuinely impossible, perhaps because witnesses are no longer traceable, the affidavit route still carries the name change, using the version that states no certificate was obtained and adds the one-and-the-same-person clause. That draft is on our marriage affidavit guide. One honest caution: an unregistered marriage makes the passport leg harder, so if travel is in your plans, treat registration as worth real effort rather than a formality to skip.
6. Half-Changed Records
The situation that brings most women back to us, and the one nobody plans for. Aadhaar was updated in the first month. PAN was not. One bank account carries the married name and another the maiden name. The passport was left because there was no travel. Then a tax return, a loan application or a visa form asks all of them the same question and they answer differently.
The fix is always forwards. Reversing an update to restore consistency wastes the work already done and is harder than completing it. What we do in these cases is short and unglamorous: list every record, establish which name each currently carries, confirm Aadhaar is correct because everything else reads it, then close the gaps in dependency order. Most of these cases take a few weeks and no gazette, because the marriage certificate that worked for Aadhaar works for the rest too. Where a gazette is needed, it is usually because the passport is one of the outstanding records.
What We Charge, and What the Government Charges
Stated separately, because bundling the two is how quotations reach five and six thousand rupees without anyone being able to see why.
| Line | Amount | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage registration application | Around Rs 100 or Rs 150 by Act | The government, through the state portal |
| Affidavit with stamp paper and notary | Rs 100 to 500 | Stamp vendor and notary, locally |
| Gazette publication fee | Rs 1,100 adult | The government, on BharatKosh, in your own name |
| Newspaper insertions | A few hundred rupees per paper | The newspapers |
| Our Basic package | From Rs 999 | Us: route decision, affidavit, document check, counter plan |
| Our Complete package | From Rs 1,999 | Us: the full gazette route, advertisements, dispatch and Part IV tracking |
Two commitments that follow from that table. The Rs 1,100 is never collected by us as cash; it is paid online in your own name with your own receipt. And where your situation is one of the four that needs no gazette, we will tell you so and Basic is all you would ever need from us.
Central Gazette Name Change: Step by Step
Our core service: for situations three and four above, and occasionally six, this is the filing our office runs from Lucknow every week.
Swear the affidavit
The gazette version, sworn by you alone, carrying the maiden name, the married name, your address and the reason, notarised in your own district.
Publish two newspaper advertisements
One Hindi daily of your district (Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala or Hindustan) and one English paper, wording copied exactly from the affidavit, complete original pages kept.
Type the proforma and prepare the CD
Two typed copies with two witnesses giving their signature, full name and address, the relationship line reading wife of, and the CD carrying the declaration as typed Word text.
Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh
Before dispatch, in your own name, with the printed receipt going into the envelope as an enclosure.
Courier the file to Civil Lines
Tracked dispatch to the Department of Publication, Delhi 110054, with your phone number and email on the covering letter.
Download from Part IV and run the counters
Publication in 25 to 45 days, free download, three prints, then Aadhaar, PAN, bank and employer, passport, and the Tehsil family.
The Three Places a Married Woman's File Differs
The route above is the same for everyone, but three fields carry marriage-specific answers that get filled in wrongly from habit.
A fourth point, less about the form and more about timing: keep both original newspaper pages after filing. The passport office asks for them again after publication, which surprises women who assume the newspapers were consumed by the gazette file. Our proforma guide has the full specimen and witness block.
Gazette Fees, Time and the File
| Adult gazette fee | Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh |
| Affidavit | Rs 100 to 500 including stamp paper and notary |
| Newspaper advertisements | A few hundred rupees per paper, edition-dependent |
| Alias line, if wanted | Rs 250 extra |
| Certificate route instead | No gazette fee at all, for four of the six situations |
| Publication window | 25 to 45 days after the Department receives the file |
| Plan from a fixed date | Roughly three months before a passport-dependent deadline |
The Department's checklist in one line: covering letter with phone and email, affidavit (notarised), newspapers (both, original, whole pages), proforma (typed, two copies, applicant plus two witnesses), CD with signed declaration, photo ID, address proof, photographs, BharatKosh receipt.
Before You Apply: Check These
- Identify which of the six situations you are in, because four of them need no gazette and two of them need it filed first.
- Fix the final arrangement of your name before any form is filled, including whether the maiden name stays as a middle name.
- If a recruitment or passport date exists, count backwards from it rather than starting at the nearest counter.
- If records are already half changed, list them before doing anything, and never reverse a completed update.
After the Gazette: What Updates Next
Aadhaar first at the Seva Kendra, then PAN online, then bank and employer together, then the passport with both newspaper pages in hand, then the Tehsil certificate family, education records where relevant, driving licence, voter ID and finally insurance policies, mutual fund folios and property records. Keep the marriage certificate, the affidavit, both newspaper pages and the gazette printout together permanently.
What Other Websites Get Wrong
- Wrong: one process fits every married woman. Right: six situations, and four of them need no gazette.
- Wrong: degrees and marksheets must be updated too. Right: they stay as issued, and the marriage certificate explains the link.
- Wrong: change your name mid-recruitment to match. Right: if you applied in the maiden name, usually leave everything until verification closes.
- Wrong: a marriage from years ago cannot be registered. Right: late registration is ordinary and usually the cheapest way forward.
- Wrong: reverse the changes to make records match. Right: always finish forwards; reversing wastes work already done.

Why Women Send Us One Line First
Most enquiries we answer take a single message: a woman describes her situation in a sentence, and we tell her which of the six she is in, what it costs and what to do on Monday. Often the answer is that she does not need us. Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, has answered that message a great many times.
- We identify the situation before quoting anything: the route decides the price, not the other way round.
- We do not sell gazettes to certificate cases: four of the six situations need no gazette, and you will hear that first.
- We are strongest on the messy cases: half-changed records, unregistered marriages and deadline-driven files are what we do most.
- Government fees are always separate: Rs 1,100 paid online in your name, our fee on its own line.

Name Change for Married Women: FAQs
Do I need a gazette to change my name after marriage?
Usually not. Four of the six common situations run on the marriage certificate and an affidavit alone. The gazette is needed mainly for central government recruitment, a strict passport file, an employer policy that names it, or where a first name is changing too.
Do I have to change my degrees and marksheets?
No. Educational certificates stay as issued, which is correct rather than a compromise. You update current records, and the marriage certificate bridges the two names whenever anyone asks.
I applied for a government job in my maiden name. Should I change now?
Usually not until verification closes. A verification desk wants your application and your documents to agree, and changing mid-process is more work than leaving both alone. File the gazette afterwards, or before the next application.
I married in 2009 and never registered it. Can I still change my name?
Yes. Register the marriage now, with the wedding card, ceremony photographs and witnesses who attended, then take the ordinary round. Late registration carries a penalty and is usually the cheapest way to unlock everything.
My documents are half changed. What should I do?
Finish the round forwards, never backwards. List every record and the name it carries, make sure Aadhaar is correct because everything reads it, then close the gaps in order. Most of these cases need a few weeks and no gazette.
I have a visa appointment in eight weeks. Is that enough time?
It is tight if a gazette is involved, because publication alone runs 25 to 45 days and the passport leg carries police verification. Plan roughly three months for a passport-dependent date, and check first whether your case needs a gazette at all.
What does the whole thing cost?
Without a gazette: certificate copies plus Rs 100 to 500 for the affidavit. With a gazette: add Rs 1,100 to the government and a few hundred rupees per newspaper insertion. Our fee is separate, from Rs 999 for Basic and Rs 1,999 for Complete.
Can I keep my maiden name professionally and change it legally?
Many women do, and it works provided the legal records are internally consistent. What causes trouble is not the professional name, it is a half-changed set of official documents.
Which document should I update first?
Aadhaar, always. PAN, banks, the Tehsil certificate family and the passport office all read it, so updating anything else first creates a mismatch you then have to explain.
Do you collect the government fee from me?
No. The Rs 1,100 is paid online on BharatKosh in your own name with your own receipt. Our fee is quoted on its own line, and any office bundling the two should be asked to separate them.
My employer says I must change my name. Is that lawful?
No employer can require it. Your name is not a condition of employment, and a marriage certificate answers any legitimate question about marital status.
What is the first thing I should do?
Decide the exact final arrangement of your name, then collect three certified copies of the marriage certificate. Those two steps serve every one of the six situations.

The Short Version
Find your situation and the route follows. Newly married: certificate, affidavit, counters, no gazette. Working woman: degrees stay as issued, only current records change. Government recruitment: gazette first, and if you already applied in your maiden name, leave everything until verification closes. Passport or visa: start roughly three months before the date. Married years ago: register the marriage now, penalty included, then the ordinary round. Half-changed records: finish forwards, never reverse. Four of the six need no gazette at all. Costs are certificate copies plus Rs 100 to 500 for the affidavit, and Rs 1,100 to the government only where a gazette is genuinely required. WhatsApp one line describing your situation to 9540005002 and we will name your route, your cost and your first step.
