Two Different Applications.

Passport Name Change After Marriage in Uttar Pradesh

You have married and you are looking at your passport wondering what to do about it. Before anything else, know that two quite different applications get called by the same name, and picking the wrong one costs you money and a new passport number for nothing. One changes your surname. The other simply adds your husband to the booklet while your own name stays exactly as it is. Most women who come to us actually want the second, and had not been told it existed.

Quick answer: Decide first which of two applications you want. Adding your husband's name keeps your own name untouched, needs no name change affidavit, and is the lighter route. Changing your surname is a reissue under change in personal particulars. Either way you get a new booklet with a new passport number, so time it around any valid visa. Where your marriage was never registered, Annexure J, a joint photo declaration signed by both of you, now stands in place of a marriage certificate, which matters in Uttar Pradesh where registration is often skipped.

The passport office is the strictest counter in this whole subject, and it is also where most confusion starts, because the language people use at home does not match the language on the form. "Changing my name after marriage" can mean two entirely different things, and the portal treats them as different applications with different documents. Working out which one you actually want takes a minute and saves a wasted fee.

Two Applications, One Phrase

ADDITION OF SPOUSE NAME your name unchanged his name appears in the booklet affidavit not needed for a name change proof marriage certificate or Annexure J -> lighter, and what most women want CHANGE IN PERSONAL PARTICULARS your surname changes applied as name or surname change proof depends on how far the change goes -> heavier, and sometimes unnecessary

Ask yourself the plain question: do you want your own name to read differently on the passport, or do you simply want the booklet to record who you are married to? Those are different wishes and the portal treats them as such. Families often assume the second requires the first, and it does not.

There is no wrong choice here. Plenty of women keep their maiden name on the passport for the sake of degrees and old visas and simply add their husband, and plenty change the surname to match Aadhaar. What costs money is choosing without knowing there were two options.

Annexure J, and Why UP Families Need It

The single most useful development for readers of this page, and it was made with families like yours in mind.

The old problem passport office wanted a MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE many marriages in UP and Bihar were never registered -> applications delayed or refused The fix ANNEXURE J a joint declaration signed by BOTH spouses, accepted in place of the certificate It must carry: a self-attested joint photograph both full names, address, marital status Aadhaar numbers, voter IDs, passport numbers where available date, place and both signatures

Officials have said openly that this was introduced because registration is less common in states like Uttar Pradesh, so if your family never registered the marriage, this is not a workaround you are getting away with. It is the intended route.

Prepare it carefully all the same. A joint photograph that is not self-attested, or a missing Aadhaar number, is exactly the kind of small gap that sends a file back. And if you do have a registered certificate, use it, since a document issued by a registrar is always simpler than a declaration.

It Is a Reissue, Not an Edit

Whichever route you take: old booklet surrendered new booklet issued new NUMBER yes validity a fresh ten years Which matters if you hold: a valid visa in the old passport booked international travel a long-term visa tied to the number

This is why the passport sits third in the update order rather than first. Aadhaar and PAN are edits to a record; a passport is a replacement document. If you have a visa stamped in the current booklet, speak to the relevant consulate about how they treat a reissued passport before you apply, because the answer varies by country and finding out afterwards is unpleasant.

If nothing is booked and no visa is live, this consideration disappears and you can apply whenever suits you.

Do Aadhaar Before the Passport

The full sequence, including what can run in parallel, is on our update order guide. The Aadhaar step itself, including the two-update limit worth protecting, is on our Aadhaar after marriage page.

Applying, Step by Step

  1. Register on the Passport Seva portal

Everything starts there, even if you plan to visit a Kendra. There is no separate offline route.

  2. Choose reissue, then the right reason

Addition of spouse name if your own name stays; change in existing personal particulars if your surname is changing.

  3. Run the Documents Advisor

On the portal, for your specific case. It is the only list that reflects your route, your city and current practice, and it takes two minutes.

  4. Fill your name exactly as your supporting document reads

Letter for letter. A near-enough version creates a mismatch that surfaces at verification rather than at the counter.

  5. Pay and book an appointment

At your nearest Passport Seva Kendra, choosing normal or Tatkal depending on urgency.

  6. Attend with originals and self-attested copies

Of everything, including the old passport. Originals are checked and returned; copies are retained.

The two minutes that save a wasted trip: Passport Seva portal -> Documents Advisor -> your application type -> your city -> your specific situation It prints the list that applies to YOU. Every general list online, including ours, is a guide rather than that.

When a Gazette Is Genuinely Needed

Worth being precise about, because this is where money gets spent unnecessarily and, occasionally, where it genuinely has to be.

Your situationGazette?
Taking your husband's surname, keeping your given nameUsually not; the marriage certificate or Annexure J covers it
Adding his name without changing yoursNo
Changing your given name as well as the surnameYes; that is a full name change
Adopting a name unrelated to either familyYes
Applying from abroadSometimes; some missions ask for it even where India does not

Where a gazette does apply, note that the passport office asks for the notification and both complete newspaper pages, which is the one counter in the country that wants the papers again after publication. That is why we tell every client to buy two copies of each edition on the day the advertisement runs, as our newspaper guide explains.

Central Gazette: the Complete Process and File Format

Our core service: where a full name change applies, this is the filing as we run it from Lucknow, drafted so the passport office gets everything it asks for the first time.

Stage 1: The affidavit

AFFIDAVIT (on non-judicial stamp paper, notarised) I, ____________________ D/O ____________________ , W/O ____________________ , R/o ____________________________________________________ , do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:- 1- That my name has been recorded as ____________________ in my passport bearing number ____________________ . 2- That consequent upon my marriage solemnised on __-__-____ , I have changed my name from ____________________ to ____________________ and I shall hereafter be known as ____________________ for all purposes. 3- That both the said names are the name of one and the same person, that is, myself. 4- That it is my true and correct statement. DEPONENT VERIFICATION:- Verified at ____________ on this __-__-20__ that the contents of the above Affidavit are true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. DEPONENT

Include the passport number in clause one and the marriage date in clause two. Both help the passport office connect your file without asking, and a file that answers questions before they are put is a file that moves.

Stage 2: The Public Notice, in two copies

PUBLIC NOTICE (TWO identical typed copies, each signed and witnessed) It is for general information that I, ____________________ D/O ____________________ , W/O ____________________ , R/o ______________________________________________ , declare that consequent upon my marriage I have changed my name from ____________________ to ____________________ and I shall hereafter be known as ____________________ for all purposes. It is certified that I have complied with other legal requirements in this connection. ____________________ Signature of Applicant WITNESS NO. 1 Signature :- ____________________ Full Name :- ____________________ Address :- ____________________ WITNESS NO. 2 Signature :- ____________________ Full Name :- ____________________ Address :- ____________________

Each witness gives signature, full name and address, and both sign both copies at one sitting.

Stage 3: The CD and CD-Certificate

CD-CERTIFICATE I, ____________________ , R/o ____________________________ , do hereby declare:- 1- That the matter in CD and hard copy is the same and I am responsible for any mismatch. 2- That I am responsible for the quality of CD. 3- That the CD is in MS-Word Format. 4- That the above statement is true and correct. Signature of Applicant ____________________ R/o ____________________ The CD holds the same Public Notice text as a real MS-Word file, not a scan. Open it on another computer and check the text can be selected.

Stage 4: Newspapers, fee, covering letter and dispatch

  1. Publish in two newspapers and buy spares

One Hindi daily of your district and one English paper. Buy two copies of each edition on the day, because the passport office will want complete original pages later and newsagents do not stock back issues.

  2. Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh

Before the envelope is sealed, with the function head, PAO and DDO checked on the confirmation screen and two receipts printed.

  3. Write the covering letter

To The Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, saying the formalities are complete and the documents are enclosed, with your mobile number and email.

  4. Assemble, check and photocopy

Affidavit, Public Notice in two witnessed copies, CD with CD-Certificate, both newspaper pages, identity and address proof, photographs and the receipt, with a full copy set at home.

  5. Courier it, tracked

One to three days from most UP districts, with no counter to visit.

  6. Search Part IV, then apply for the passport

Publication in 25 to 45 days. Download the notification, print about five copies, and only then start the reissue application.

The Counter That Wants Your Newspapers Back

Worth its own section because it catches people out more than anything else on this page.

Every other office accepts the gazette alone. Aadhaar Kendra gazette Bank gazette Board gazette The PASSPORT office asks for the gazette notification AND both complete newspaper pages Not clippings. The whole page, with the masthead and date visible. Buy two copies of each edition on the day the advertisement runs. Nobody sells them back to you six weeks later.

Clients who discover this at the appointment have sometimes managed to obtain archived copies from a newspaper office, which is possible but slow and occasionally impossible for a small district edition. Ten rupees on the day removes the risk entirely.

Gazette Fees, Time and the File

Passport reissue feeAs per the Passport Seva schedule for your booklet and speed
AffidavitRs 100 to 500 including stamp paper and notary
Adult gazette feeRs 1,100 on BharatKosh, where a full name change applies
Newspaper advertisementsA few hundred rupees per paper, plus spare copies
Annexure JNo fee; it is a declaration you prepare
Publication window25 to 45 days after the Department receives the file
Our serviceBasic from Rs 999, Complete from Rs 1,999, quoted separately

The envelope in one line: covering letter with your phone and email, affidavit (notarised), Public Notice typed in two copies with two witnesses on each, CD in MS-Word format with the signed CD-Certificate, both complete newspaper pages, photo identity proof, address proof, photographs and the BharatKosh receipt.

Before You Apply: Check These

After the Gazette: What Updates Next

Once the new passport arrives, check every field before filing it away, since a reissue is retyped rather than copied. Then the remaining records: bank and employer if not already done, Tehsil certificates, and education records last. Keep the old passport, the new one, the gazette and both newspaper pages together, because the passport office is also the office most likely to ask for the whole chain again at a future renewal.

Passport After Marriage: FAQs

Do I have to change my name on my passport after marriage?

No. It is not legally required, and many women keep their maiden name on the passport for the sake of degrees and old visas while simply adding their husband's name to the booklet.

What is the difference between the two applications?

Addition of spouse name leaves your own name untouched and needs no name change affidavit. Change in personal particulars actually changes your surname. The portal treats them as different applications.

My marriage was never registered. Can I still apply?

Yes. Annexure J, a joint declaration signed by both spouses with a self-attested joint photograph, is accepted in place of a marriage certificate, and it was introduced with states like Uttar Pradesh in mind.

What must Annexure J contain?

A self-attested joint photograph, both full names, address and marital status, Aadhaar numbers, voter IDs and passport numbers where available, and the date, place and signatures of both parties.

Will my passport number change?

Yes. Both routes are a reissue, so you receive a new booklet with a new number and a fresh ten years of validity.

I have a valid visa in my current passport. Does that matter?

It can. Ask the relevant consulate how they treat a reissued passport before you apply, because the answer varies by country and finding out afterwards is unpleasant.

Should I update Aadhaar first?

Yes. The passport office looks at your other identity records, so a set that already agrees with your application avoids questions.

Do I need a gazette?

Usually not for a routine surname change after marriage. You do need one if your given name is also changing, or if you are adopting a name unrelated to either family.

Why does the passport office want my newspapers?

It is the one counter that asks for the gazette notification and both complete original newspaper pages. Buy two copies of each edition on the day, because nobody sells them back to you six weeks later.

Where do I get the right document list?

The Documents Advisor on the Passport Seva portal, run for your own application type, city and situation. It takes two minutes and is the only list that reflects your case.

Can I apply offline instead?

No. Everything starts on the Passport Seva portal even if you visit a Kendra afterwards.

What should I check when the new passport arrives?

Every field, because a reissue is retyped rather than copied. Check the spelling of your name, your husband's name and your date of birth before filing it away.

Official Sources

Facts here are checked against these sources and our own casework. Fees, timelines and document lists are revised periodically and should be confirmed through the Documents Advisor; the distinction between the two applications is the stable part.

About the founder: Founded by Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years of direct filing experience with the Department of Publication. Every process detail here comes from files we have actually prepared and followed through to publication, not from copied web content.

The Short Version

Two different applications get called a name change after marriage, and picking the wrong one costs a fee and a new passport number for nothing. Adding your husband's name leaves your own name untouched and needs no name change affidavit; changing your surname is a reissue under change in personal particulars. Most women who ask about the first actually want the second, and had not been told it existed. If your marriage was never registered, which is common in Uttar Pradesh, Annexure J is a joint declaration signed by both spouses that stands in place of a marriage certificate, and it was introduced with exactly these families in mind. Either route issues a new booklet with a new number, so check any live visa before applying, update Aadhaar first, and run the portal's Documents Advisor for your own case rather than trusting any general list.

Name or Just His Name?

Tell us whether you want your surname changed or only his name added. That one answer changes the whole application.
