Finding a Centre That Qualifies

Start at UIDAI's own locator rather than searching a map for the nearest shop with an Aadhaar board outside. The distinction matters because a name update requires biometric capture, and only listed enrolment and update centres are equipped and authorised for it.

• Use the official locator at UIDAI's site, searching by state, district and pin code rather than by name.
• Check the centre is currently listed, since centres open and close and an old blog post is not evidence that one still operates.
• Prefer a listed Aadhaar Seva Kendra where one exists within reasonable travel.
• Telephone before travelling where a number is shown, particularly for a small centre, to confirm it is operating that day.
• Ignore agents offering to do it for you remotely. You must be physically present for biometric verification, so anyone claiming otherwise is selling nothing.

Which Type of Centre to Choose

Our practical advice for a name update specifically: travel to a full Seva Kendra if one is within an hour. A name update is a more involved transaction than an address change, operators at dedicated centres handle them constantly, and the difference in confidence at the counter is noticeable. For a straightforward case with a clean document, a bank counter is perfectly adequate; for anything unusual, the dedicated centre is worth the bus fare.

Booking Properly

1. Book online where the centre supports it

   Through UIDAI's appointment system, choosing your city and centre. This converts an uncertain morning into a scheduled slot.

2. Choose an early slot on an early weekday

   Mondays and Tuesdays are usually calmer than Fridays and Saturdays, and month-end tends to be busier everywhere.

3. Select the correct service when booking

   Name update, not address or document update. Booking the wrong service can mean being turned away or sent to a different queue.

4. Note the appointment reference

   Save it on your phone and print it if you can, since some centres check it at the door.

5. Arrive a little early, not much

   Ten to fifteen minutes is useful. Two hours early achieves nothing at an appointment-based centre.

6. Reschedule rather than skipping

   If you cannot attend, cancel or reschedule properly, because a missed slot is one somebody else could have used and repeated no-shows complicate rebooking.

Where the nearest centre does not offer appointments, plan to arrive at opening and expect to wait. Ask the person at the door which token or queue applies to updates rather than joining the longest line, which is frequently for enrolment rather than updates.

What to Carry

• The supporting document in original, whichever one covers your case, since operators verify against the original even where a copy is retained.
• Photocopies of the same document, which many centres keep.
• Your existing Aadhaar, the card or a printed e-Aadhaar.
• A phone with the linked mobile number, because OTP verification may be required during the transaction.
• Your husband's Aadhaar, for a marriage-related surname change, as several centres ask for it.
• The gazette prints, where publication is part of your case, alongside an identity document in the old name.
• The appointment reference and the fee in cash, since not every counter accepts digital payment.

The Twenty Minutes at the Counter

1. State exactly what you want changed

   Give the complete final name rather than only the part bothering you, because a second visit later costs a second lifetime update.

2. Hand over the original and the copies

   The operator verifies the original and enters the new details from it.

3. Read the screen before biometrics

   Ask to see the typed name and check it character by character. This is the single most valuable thing you do at the counter.

4. Give biometrics

   Fingerprints and iris as required, which is why the visit must be in person and cannot be delegated.

5. Pay the fee and take the slip

   Nominal and revised periodically. The slip carries your URN.

6. Check the slip before leaving the desk

   Confirm the new name printed on it is correct. Once you walk away, correcting an operator's error becomes your problem rather than theirs.

Step three deserves the emphasis it gets throughout this site. An operator typing quickly can introduce a new error while fixing your old one, and because the update is then spent, you would need your second and final lifetime update to repair it. After You Leave

• Photograph the acknowledgment slip immediately, because paper slips fade and get lost and the URN is your only handle on the request.
• Track the status on the UIDAI portal using the URN, rather than assuming silence means progress.
• Wait for the update to reflect before starting PAN or the bank, since acting mid-update creates a fresh mismatch.
• Download the updated e-Aadhaar once it reflects, and check the name on it against what you asked for.
• If it was rejected, read the reason before returning; most rejections are document problems rather than refusals of the change itself.
• Then run the chain, PAN, bank, employer and the rest, in the order our sequencing guide sets out.

Central Gazette Name Change: Step by Step

1. Swear the affidavit

   Notarised on stamp paper with the old name, the new name, your address and the reason, signed in the notary's presence in your own district.

2. Publish two newspaper advertisements

   One Hindi daily of your district (Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala or Hindustan) and one English paper, booked the same day, with complete original pages kept flat.

3. Type the proforma and prepare the CD

   Two typed copies with two witnesses giving their signature, full name and address, and the CD carrying the declaration as typed Word text, opened on another computer to verify.

4. Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh

   Before dispatch, with the function head, PAO and DDO confirmed on the confirmation screen and the receipt printed for the envelope.

5. Courier the file to Civil Lines

   Tracked dispatch to the Department of Publication, Delhi 110054, with your phone number and email on the covering letter.

6. Download, print, then book the Kendra

   Publication in 25 to 45 days, free download, three prints, and only then the appointment, so the notification is in hand on the day.

Book the Kendra After Publication, Not Before

A scheduling mistake that costs people a wasted appointment, and it comes from good intentions. Knowing the gazette takes 25 to 45 days, some applicants book the Kendra slot in advance to save time, then arrive with the notification still unpublished.

The Department's checklist in one line: covering letter with phone and email, affidavit (notarised), newspapers (both, original, whole pages), proforma (typed, two copies, applicant plus two witnesses), CD with signed declaration, photo ID, address proof, photographs, BharatKosh receipt.

• Verify the centre on UIDAI's locator rather than trusting a signboard or an old listing.
• Carry the original document, not only a photocopy, which is the commonest wasted trip.
• Read the operator's screen before biometrics are captured, every time.
• Where a gazette is involved, book the appointment only after the notification is downloaded and printed.

After the Gazette: What Updates Next

Once the Aadhaar update reflects, run the chain: PAN so linking holds, then bank KYC and employer records together, then the passport, then the Tehsil certificate family, education records through their own routes, and finally insurance folios and property. Keep the acknowledgment slip until the update is confirmed, and file the supporting document with the updated Aadhaar afterwards.
