Care Of, Not Name.

Father's Name Correction in Aadhaar Card in Uttar Pradesh

Your father’s name does not sit in the name field on your Aadhaar. It sits in the Care of field, alongside the address, and that placement changes everything about this correction. It is not treated as a change to your name, so it does not draw on the two lifetime name updates that govern the rest of Aadhaar, and the proof required is lighter. This is usually the cheapest and quickest of all the father’s name corrections, which is a good reason to get it right early.

Quick answer: On Aadhaar your father's name appears in the Care of field, which forms part of the address block rather than the name field. Correcting it is therefore not a name update, so it does not draw on the two lifetime name changes that govern your own name, and the proof required is lighter. Take a document showing his correct name to a Seva Kendra, or use the online update where your centre supports it for address-block fields. It is the cheapest correction in this whole cluster, which is a good reason to do it early rather than last.

People arrive at this expecting the same difficulty they met with their marksheet, and are surprised. The reason is structural: Aadhaar was designed around identifying you, so your name, your date of birth and your gender are tightly controlled fields with hard limits. A parent's name is not one of those. It sits in the Care of line, which exists to help locate a household, and it is governed by the ordinary rules for address-block information. Understanding that distinction saves both worry and money.

Why the Care of Field Is Different

AADHAAR FIELDS Identity fields (tightly controlled) Name -> 2 updates for life Date of birth -> 1 update for life Gender -> 1 update for life Address block (ordinary update rules) Care of (C/O) -> father, husband or guardian name House, street, locality, district, pin -> no comparable lifetime cap

Look at where your father's name actually appears on the card and this becomes obvious: it is printed with the address, prefixed C/O, not on the line carrying your own name. Aadhaar treats it as part of locating a household rather than as part of identifying you, and that is the whole explanation for the lighter treatment.

One practical consequence people find unexpected: the field can hold a father, a husband or a guardian, and which one it holds may change over a lifetime. A woman who marries may move from her father's name to her husband's in that field, which is an address-block update rather than anything to do with her own name, and is covered on our Aadhaar after marriage page.

What This Means for Your Update Allowance

The most useful thing on this page, because it removes a fear that stops people acting.

Correcting YOUR name on Aadhaar -> spends 1 of your 2 lifetime name updates Correcting your FATHER'S name in the C/O field -> does NOT spend a name update -> it is an address-block correction So this one can be done without anxiety about what you might need the allowance for later.

That matters because the allowance is genuinely scarce, as our limit page sets out, and people quite reasonably become cautious about touching Aadhaar at all. Here the caution is misplaced. If your father's name is wrong in the Care of field, correct it whenever convenient; you are not spending anything you will miss.

The one situation to think about is a visit where both need attention. If your own name also needs correcting, do them in the same visit, settle your complete final name beforehand, and remember that the name part uses an update while the Care of part does not.

The Proof, Which Is Lighter Here

Because this is an address-block field rather than an identity field, centres are generally less demanding about the document set than they are for a name change. That is a reason to bring more rather than fewer papers: producing his Aadhaar, his PAN and your birth certificate together makes the correction obvious on its face and shortens the conversation.

How to Get It Corrected

  1. Settle which version of his name is correct

From his own records, as our mismatch page sets out. Do this before travelling, not at the counter.

  2. Check whether online update is available to you

Address-block updates are supported online in some circumstances. Where your case qualifies, this saves a trip; where it does not, a Kendra visit is straightforward.

  3. Book a Kendra appointment if going in person

Through UIDAI's appointment system, choosing an early weekday slot, as our Seva Kendra guide explains.

  4. Carry originals and copies

His identity document, your birth certificate and your own Aadhaar, plus the phone with your linked mobile number for OTP.

  5. Check the operator's screen

Read the C/O line character by character before the transaction is submitted, exactly as you would for a name.

  6. Keep the acknowledgment with the URN

Photograph it before leaving, track the status, and download the updated e-Aadhaar once it reflects.

Why It Matters More Than It Used To

A Care of correction used to be cosmetic. It is not any more, for a specific reason: Tehsil certificates are increasingly issued through Aadhaar e-KYC, and what those certificates print is often copied from what Aadhaar holds.

The sequencing rule that follows: Fix the C/O field BEFORE applying for any Tehsil certificate. Otherwise the certificate arrives with the wrong parent name, and then needs its own correction on top of everything else.

This is the same logic that runs through our Aadhaar mismatch page: Aadhaar has become the record others copy from, so an error in it propagates forward rather than sitting still.

What It Does Not Fix

Worth being clear about, because the ease of this correction sometimes creates the impression that it settles the wider problem.

DocumentDoes the C/O correction fix it?
Your Board marksheetsNo. The school and Board route applies, per our marksheet page
Your birth certificateNo. The registrar runs its own correction
Tehsil certificates already issuedNo. Each needs a fresh application, though future ones will be right
Your service recordNo. Your employer holds that separately
Your father's own AadhaarNo. That is his record and his correction to make

Think of it as the first and cheapest step in a longer list rather than the answer. Where the same error runs across several of your documents, the single-notice route on our mismatch page is usually the efficient way to handle the rest.

Central Gazette: the Complete Process and File Format

Our core service: a Care of correction needs no gazette. We set out the full route here because clients often find, once they start looking, that the same error runs through several documents, and a single correction notice is then the efficient answer.

Stage 1: The affidavit

AFFIDAVIT (on non-judicial stamp paper, notarised) I, ____________________ S/O ____________________ , R/o ____________________________________________________ , do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:- 1- That the name of my father has been wrongly written as ____________________ in ____________________ (name each document), and the actual name of my father is ____________________ , which may be amended accordingly. 2- That it is my true and correct statement. DEPONENT VERIFICATION:- Verified at ____________ on this __-__-20__ that the contents of the above Affidavit are true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. DEPONENT

Name each document specifically rather than referring to "my documents", because the whole usefulness of the notice afterwards depends on each authority finding its own record identified in it.

Stage 2: The Public Notice, in two copies

PUBLIC NOTICE (TWO identical typed copies, each signed and witnessed) It is for general information that I, ____________________ S/O ____________________ , R/o ______________________________ ____________________________________ . Declare that the name of my father has been wrongly written as ____________________ in ____________________ . The actual name of my father is ____________________ , which may be amended accordingly. It is certified that I have complied with other legal requirements in this connection. ____________________ Signature of Applicant WITNESS NO. 1 Signature :- ____________________ Full Name :- ____________________ Address :- ____________________ WITNESS NO. 2 Signature :- ____________________ Full Name :- ____________________ Address :- ____________________

Each witness gives signature, full name and address, and both sign both copies at one sitting. Keep the certification line, which belongs to the format.

Stage 3: The CD and CD-Certificate

CD-CERTIFICATE I, ____________________ S/O ____________________ , R/o ____________________________________________________ , do hereby declare:- 1- That the matter in CD and hard copy is the same and I am responsible for any mismatch. 2- That I am responsible for the quality of CD. 3- That the CD is in MS-Word Format. 4- That the above statement is true and correct. Signature of Applicant ____________________ S/O ____________________ R/o ____________________ The CD carries the same Public Notice text as a real MS-Word file. Open it on a different computer and confirm the text can be selected before sealing the envelope.

Stage 4: Newspapers, fee and covering letter

  1. Publish in two newspapers

One Hindi daily of your district and one English paper, booked the day the affidavit is sworn, keeping complete original pages with masthead and date, and buying two copies of each edition.

  2. Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh

Before the envelope is sealed, with the function head, PAO and DDO confirmed on the confirmation screen, and two receipts printed.

  3. Write the covering letter

To The Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, stating that the formalities are complete and the documents are enclosed, with your mobile number and email added.

  4. Assemble, check and photocopy

Affidavit, Public Notice in two witnessed copies, CD with CD-Certificate, both newspaper pages, identity and address proof, photographs and the receipt, with a full copy set kept at home.

  5. Courier it, tracked

One to three days in transit from most UP districts, with no counter to visit.

  6. Search Part IV after 25 to 45 days

Weekly Gazette, Part IV, a Saturday date range covering your window, then download the whole issue and note the issue number and date.

Do You Even Need the Notice for Aadhaar?

A question worth answering plainly, because clients who read about the gazette route sometimes assume it is needed here too.

For the C/O field alone -> no notice, no gazette -> his identity document is the proof For a Board marksheet or a service record -> the notice earns its fee, because those authorities want more than your word So: correct Aadhaar first, cheaply, and decide about publication only for the heavier documents.

Sequencing it that way is deliberate. The C/O correction is quick and costs almost nothing, so do it while you decide about the rest. And once your Aadhaar carries his correct name, the file you eventually take to a Board or an employer is stronger, because your identity record now agrees with what you are claiming.

Gazette Fees, Time and the File

Aadhaar C/O correctionA nominal update fee; no gazette needed
AffidavitRs 100 to 500 including stamp paper and notary
Adult gazette feeRs 1,100 on BharatKosh, for the heavier documents only
Newspaper advertisementsA few hundred rupees per paper, edition-dependent
Board correction feeAround Rs 1,000 per application, if marksheets are involved
Publication window25 to 45 days after the Department receives the file
Our serviceBasic from Rs 999, Complete from Rs 1,999, quoted separately

The envelope in one line: covering letter with your phone and email, affidavit (notarised), Public Notice typed in two copies with two witnesses on each, CD in MS-Word format with the signed CD-Certificate, both complete newspaper pages, photo identity proof, address proof, photographs and the BharatKosh receipt.

Before You Apply: Check These

After the Gazette: What Updates Next

With Aadhaar corrected, work outward to the documents that actually matter: Board marksheets through your school, the birth certificate through the registrar, Tehsil certificates by fresh application, and your service record through your employer. Where several carry the same error, a single correction notice naming them all is usually the efficient route, as our mismatch page explains.

Why We Start Clients Here

When a father's name is wrong across several documents, we usually begin with the Aadhaar Care of field, and clients sometimes think we are avoiding the hard part. We are not: it is quick, it costs almost nothing, it spends no allowance, and it makes every later file stronger. Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, sequences these deliberately.

Father's Name in Aadhaar: FAQs

Where does my father's name appear on Aadhaar?

In the Care of field, printed with the address and prefixed C/O, not on the line carrying your own name. That placement is why the correction rules are lighter.

Does correcting it use one of my two name updates?

No. The two-update limit applies to your own name. A Care of correction is an address-block update, so the allowance stays untouched.

What proof do I need?

A document showing his correct name, usually his Aadhaar, with his PAN or voter ID as corroboration and your birth certificate establishing the relationship. Bring originals.

Can it be done online?

Address-block updates are supported online in some circumstances. Where your case qualifies it saves a trip; otherwise a Seva Kendra visit is straightforward.

My father has passed away. Can it still be corrected?

Yes. His death certificate alongside his surviving identity documents establishes the name, and your birth certificate establishes the relationship.

Do I need a gazette for this?

No. Publication is for the heavier documents such as Board marksheets and service records, not for the Care of field.

Should I do this before or after other corrections?

Before. It is quick, costs almost nothing, spends no allowance, and it makes every later file stronger because your identity record then agrees with what you are claiming.

Why does it matter if it is only an address field?

Because Tehsil certificates such as caste, domicile, income and EWS are increasingly issued through Aadhaar e-KYC, so a wrong Care of entry produces a freshly wrong certificate that needs its own correction.

Does this fix my marksheet as well?

No. The Board runs its own process through your school, and so does the registrar for a birth certificate and your employer for a service record.

Can the field hold my husband's name instead?

Yes. The Care of field can hold a father, husband or guardian, and moving from one to the other is an address-block update rather than a change to your own name.

What if my own name is also wrong?

Do both in one visit, settling your complete final name beforehand. The name part uses one of your two lifetime updates; the Care of part does not.

How long does it take to reflect?

Usually days to a few weeks. Track it with the URN from the acknowledgment slip, and download the updated e-Aadhaar to confirm the C/O line reads correctly.

Official Sources

Facts on this page are checked against these sources and our own casework. Update channels and fees are revised periodically and should be confirmed at the centre; the placement of a parent's name in the address block is the stable core.

About the founder: Founded by Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years of direct filing experience with the Department of Publication. Every process detail on this page comes from files we have actually prepared and followed through to publication, not from copied web content.

The Short Version

Your father's name sits in the Care of field on Aadhaar, printed with the address rather than on your own name line, and that placement changes the rules. It is not a name update, so it does not spend either of your two lifetime name changes, and the proof is lighter: his Aadhaar or another identity document showing the correct version, with your birth certificate establishing the relationship. Do it early rather than last, because Tehsil certificates such as caste, domicile, income and EWS are increasingly issued through Aadhaar e-KYC and will copy whatever the Care of field says. But do not mistake it for a solution: your marksheets, your birth certificate, existing certificates and your service record each run their own process, and where the same error runs through several of them, a single gazette correction notice naming them all is usually the efficient way through.

C/O Field Wrong?

Send your Aadhaar and your father's, and we will tell you whether this is a Care of update or something larger.
