People arrive at this expecting the same difficulty they met with their marksheet, and are surprised. The reason is structural: Aadhaar was designed around identifying you, so your name, your date of birth and your gender are tightly controlled fields with hard limits. A parent's name is not one of those. It sits in the Care of line, which exists to help locate a household, and it is governed by the ordinary rules for address-block information. Understanding that distinction saves both worry and money.

Why the Care of Field Is Different

Look at where your father's name actually appears on the card and this becomes obvious: it is printed with the address, prefixed C/O, not on the line carrying your own name. Aadhaar treats it as part of locating a household rather than as part of identifying you, and that is the whole explanation for the lighter treatment.

One practical consequence people find unexpected: the field can hold a father, a husband or a guardian, and which one it holds may change over a lifetime. A woman who marries may move from her father's name to her husband's in that field, which is an address-block update rather than anything to do with her own name, and is covered on our Aadhaar after marriage page.

What This Means for Your Update Allowance

The most useful thing on this page, because it removes a fear that stops people acting.

That matters because the allowance is genuinely scarce, as our limit page sets out, and people quite reasonably become cautious about touching Aadhaar at all. Here the caution is misplaced. If your father's name is wrong in the Care of field, correct it whenever convenient; you are not spending anything you will miss.

The one situation to think about is a visit where both need attention. If your own name also needs correcting, do them in the same visit, settle your complete final name beforehand, and remember that the name part uses an update while the Care of part does not.

The Proof, Which Is Lighter Here

• His Aadhaar is the simplest and most commonly accepted, since it shows his name as an authority already records it.
• His PAN, voter ID or driving licence corroborate, and older documents carry weight where his own records differ.
• Your birth certificate does double duty: it names him and establishes that he is your father.
• His death certificate where he has passed away, alongside his surviving identity documents.
• Originals, since operators verify against the original even where a photocopy is retained.

Because this is an address-block field rather than an identity field, centres are generally less demanding about the document set than they are for a name change. That is a reason to bring more rather than fewer papers: producing his Aadhaar, his PAN and your birth certificate together makes the correction obvious on its face and shortens the conversation.

How to Get It Corrected

1. Settle which version of his name is correct

   From his own records, as our mismatch page sets out. Do this before travelling, not at the counter.

2. Check whether online update is available to you

   Address-block updates are supported online in some circumstances. Where your case qualifies, this saves a trip; where it does not, a Kendra visit is straightforward.

3. Book a Kendra appointment if going in person

4. Carry originals and copies

   His identity document, your birth certificate and your own Aadhaar, plus the phone with your linked mobile number for OTP.

5. Check the operator's screen

   Read the C/O line character by character before the transaction is submitted, exactly as you would for a name.

6. Keep the acknowledgment with the URN

   Photograph it before leaving, track the status, and download the updated e-Aadhaar once it reflects.

Why It Matters More Than It Used To

A Care of correction used to be cosmetic. It is not any more, for a specific reason: Tehsil certificates are increasingly issued through Aadhaar e-KYC, and what those certificates print is often copied from what Aadhaar holds.

• Caste, domicile, income and EWS certificates carry a parent's name and are issued against e-KYC, so a wrong C/O produces a freshly wrong certificate.
• Scholarship and benefit portals match parent details in some schemes, and a mismatch can stall an application silently.
• Ration card and household records increasingly seed against Aadhaar.
• Bank and KYC processes occasionally compare the C/O line for address verification.

What It Does Not Fix

Worth being clear about, because the ease of this correction sometimes creates the impression that it settles the wider problem.

Central Gazette: the Complete Process and File Format

Stage 1: The affidavit

Name each document specifically rather than referring to "my documents", because the whole usefulness of the notice afterwards depends on each authority finding its own record identified in it.

Stage 2: The Public Notice, in two copies

Each witness gives signature, full name and address, and both sign both copies at one sitting. Keep the certification line, which belongs to the format.

Stage 3: The CD and CD-Certificate

Stage 4: Newspapers, fee and covering letter

1. Publish in two newspapers

   One Hindi daily of your district and one English paper, booked the day the affidavit is sworn, keeping complete original pages with masthead and date, and buying two copies of each edition.

2. Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh

   Before the envelope is sealed, with the function head, PAO and DDO confirmed on the confirmation screen, and two receipts printed.

3. Write the covering letter

   To The Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, stating that the formalities are complete and the documents are enclosed, with your mobile number and email added.

4. Assemble, check and photocopy

   Affidavit, Public Notice in two witnessed copies, CD with CD-Certificate, both newspaper pages, identity and address proof, photographs and the receipt, with a full copy set kept at home.

5. Courier it, tracked

   One to three days in transit from most UP districts, with no counter to visit.

6. Search Part IV after 25 to 45 days

   Weekly Gazette, Part IV, a Saturday date range covering your window, then download the whole issue and note the issue number and date.

Do You Even Need the Notice for Aadhaar?

A question worth answering plainly, because clients who read about the gazette route sometimes assume it is needed here too.

Sequencing it that way is deliberate. The C/O correction is quick and costs almost nothing, so do it while you decide about the rest. And once your Aadhaar carries his correct name, the file you eventually take to a Board or an employer is stronger, because your identity record now agrees with what you are claiming.

The envelope in one line: covering letter with your phone and email, affidavit (notarised), Public Notice typed in two copies with two witnesses on each, CD in MS-Word format with the signed CD-Certificate, both complete newspaper pages, photo identity proof, address proof, photographs and the BharatKosh receipt.

Before You Apply: Check These

• Confirm the wrong entry is in the Care of field rather than your own name, since the routes differ entirely.
• Settle which version of his name is correct from his own records before travelling.
• Fix the C/O field before applying for any Tehsil certificate, or the new certificate arrives wrong.
• Do not assume this fixes anything else; each other document runs its own process.

With Aadhaar corrected, work outward to the documents that actually matter: Board marksheets through your school, the birth certificate through the registrar, Tehsil certificates by fresh application, and your service record through your employer.
