Which One Is Wrong?

PAN and Aadhaar Name Mismatch Fix in Uttar Pradesh

Your PAN will not link to your Aadhaar, and the message tells you the details do not match without saying which detail or why. The system is comparing two names letter by letter, so even one extra space or a middle name present on one record and absent on the other is enough to stop it. Fixing this takes one decision first: which of the two records is actually wrong. That is a different question from which one you use more often, and getting it backwards means correcting the wrong document.

Quick answer: Linking compares the two names character by character, so a middle name on one card and not the other, an extra space, or one different letter is enough to fail it. Correct the record that is genuinely wrong, not the one that is easier to change. In most cases that is the PAN, because a PAN correction is done online, costs a small fee and has no limit, while an Aadhaar name update is a counter visit and spends one of only two you get for life. Left unlinked, a PAN can become inoperative, which is why this is worth settling promptly.

The unhelpful part of this problem is the error message. It says the details do not match and stops there, so people begin guessing: maybe the date of birth, maybe the spelling, maybe the father's name. Almost always it is the name, and almost always the difference is small enough that a human reading both cards would not notice it. The system is not reading like a human.

Why It Failed

The check is a character comparison. Aadhaar RAJESH KUMAR SINGH PAN RAJESH SINGH -> middle name on one card only -> FAIL Aadhaar K SHARMA PAN KRISHNA SHARMA -> initial against expanded -> FAIL Aadhaar SUNIL VERMA (two spaces) PAN SUNIL VERMA -> invisible to you -> FAIL None of these is a real discrepancy. All of them stop the link.

That is why the error feels absurd when you hold both cards and they look the same. Read them letter by letter, including the gaps, and the difference is usually obvious within a minute. Write both names out on paper exactly as printed before doing anything else.

Which Record Is Wrong

The decision the whole fix turns on, and people rush past it.

Wrong question which is easier to change? Right question which one is actually WRONG? Because if you change the correct record to match the incorrect one, you have made the problem permanent and spread it. Ask instead: what does my birth certificate say? what does my Class 10 marksheet say? what does my passport say? The version most of your real documents carry is the correct one. Fix the other.

Why the PAN Is Usually the Cheaper Side

PAN correctionAadhaar name update
WhereOnline, from homeA Seva Kendra, in person
CostA small correction feeA nominal counter fee
LimitNoneTwo for your whole life
SpeedAn e-PAN within daysDays to a few weeks
Number changes?NoNo

That lifetime limit on Aadhaar is the reason we push people to check carefully. Spending one of two updates to fix a linking error, when the Aadhaar was correct all along and the PAN was wrong, is an expensive way to solve a cheap problem. The limit and the route past it are on our two-update page.

Fixing It, Step by Step

  1. Write both names out exactly as printed

Letter by letter, including spaces. The difference is usually visible within a minute once you do this.

  2. Check what your older documents say

Birth certificate, Class 10 marksheet, passport. The version most of them carry is the correct one.

  3. Correct whichever record is wrong

PAN online through the official portal, or Aadhaar at a Seva Kendra if the PAN is the correct one.

  4. Wait for the correction to reflect

Days for an e-PAN, and days to a few weeks for Aadhaar. Do not attempt linking before it shows.

  5. Try the link again

On the income tax portal, once both records read identically.

  6. Keep the corrected card and the old one

Because the pair explains the history at any later verification.

If the correction itself is refused, that is a different problem, and the PAN route is covered on our PAN guide with the Aadhaar counter on our Seva Kendra guide.

When It Is the Date of Birth Instead

The full route is on our Aadhaar date page and our date of birth guide. It is worth reading before spending the single update.

What Happens If You Leave It

An unlinked PAN can be treated as INOPERATIVE. Which affects, in practice: filing a return claiming a refund higher deduction at source opening or operating some accounts larger financial transactions None of it is dramatic on the day. All of it is inconvenient in the month you need the account to work.

So this belongs on the list of things worth finishing rather than tolerating. It is also among the cheapest problems on this website to solve, since in the common case it is one online correction and a fee of a few hundred rupees.

Central Gazette: the Complete Process and File Format

Our core service: most linking failures need no gazette at all. Where the underlying issue is a genuine name change rather than a mismatch, this is the filing as we run it from Lucknow.

Stage 1: The affidavit

AFFIDAVIT (on non-judicial stamp paper, notarised) I, ____________________ S/O ____________________ , R/o ____________________________________________________ , do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:- 1- That my name has been recorded as ____________________ in my PAN bearing number ____________________ and as ____________________ in my Aadhaar bearing number ____________________ . 2- That both the said names are the name of one and the same person, that is, myself, and my correct name is ____________________ . 3- That the said difference is on account of a clerical error. 4- That it is my true and correct statement. DEPONENT VERIFICATION:- Verified at ____________ on this __-__-20__ that the contents of the above Affidavit are true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. DEPONENT

This is the one-and-the-same wording, not a name change declaration, and it is what a bank or an employer may ask for while the correction is being processed. It is a bridge rather than a fix, and the correction itself still has to be made.

Stage 2: The Public Notice, in two copies

PUBLIC NOTICE (TWO identical typed copies, each signed and witnessed) It is for general information that I, ____________________ S/O ____________________ , R/o ______________________________ ____________________________________ , declare that I have changed my name from ____________________ to ____________________ and I shall hereafter be known as ____________________ for all purposes. It is certified that I have complied with other legal requirements in this connection. ____________________ Signature of Applicant WITNESS NO. 1 Signature :- ____________________ Full Name :- ____________________ Address :- ____________________ WITNESS NO. 2 Signature :- ____________________ Full Name :- ____________________ Address :- ____________________

Each witness gives signature, full name and address, and both sign both copies at one sitting.

Stage 3: The CD and CD-Certificate

CD-CERTIFICATE I, ____________________ S/O ____________________ , R/o ____________________________________________________ , do hereby declare:- 1- That the matter in CD and hard copy is the same and I am responsible for any mismatch. 2- That I am responsible for the quality of CD. 3- That the CD is in MS-Word Format. 4- That the above statement is true and correct. Signature of Applicant ____________________ R/o ____________________ The CD holds the same Public Notice text as a real MS-Word file, not a scan.

Stage 4: Newspapers, fee, covering letter and dispatch

  1. Publish in two newspapers and buy four copies

One Hindi daily of your district and one English paper. Two copies of each edition, since the passport counter asks for complete pages later.

  2. Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh

Before the envelope is sealed, with the function head, PAO and DDO checked on the confirmation screen and two receipts printed.

  3. Write the covering letter

To The Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, saying the formalities are complete and the documents are enclosed, with your mobile number and email.

  4. Assemble, check and photocopy

Affidavit, Public Notice in two witnessed copies, CD with CD-Certificate, both newspaper pages, identity and address proof, photographs and the receipt.

  5. Courier it, tracked

One to three days from most UP districts, with no counter to visit.

  6. Publish, download, then Aadhaar, then PAN

Twenty-five to forty-five days, then the download, then Aadhaar, and PAN after it so the link succeeds first time.

Aadhaar First, PAN Second, Link Third

Where a real name change is involved: 1. gazette published 2. AADHAAR updated 3. PAN corrected to match Aadhaar 4. link Doing PAN before Aadhaar means: PAN now shows the new name Aadhaar still shows the old one the link fails for a NEW reason and you have created work The order is not a preference. It is what makes the link succeed on the first try.

This is the same sequence used across the whole update journey, and it exists for exactly this reason. The full ordering is on our update order page.

Gazette Fees, Time and the File

PAN correctionThe standard online correction fee
Aadhaar name updateA nominal Kendra fee; one of two for life
Affidavit, where a bank asks for oneRs 100 to 500 including stamp paper and notary
Adult gazette fee, only for a real changeRs 1,100 on BharatKosh
Newspaper advertisementsA few hundred rupees per paper
Typical linking fixUsually only the PAN correction fee
Publication window25 to 45 days, where a gazette applies

The envelope in one line, where publication is genuinely needed: covering letter with your phone and email, affidavit (notarised), Public Notice typed in two copies with two witnesses on each, CD in MS-Word format with the signed CD-Certificate, both complete newspaper pages, photo identity proof, address proof, photographs and the BharatKosh receipt.

Before You Correct Anything: Check These

After the Gazette: What Updates Next

Once the link succeeds, check that your bank and employer records carry the same version, since they were often opened from whichever card was to hand. Keep the corrected card together with the older one, because the pair explains the change at any later verification and saves an argument.

What Other Websites Get Wrong

Areas We Serve in Uttar Pradesh

The PAN side is entirely online, so this needs no travel at all, and only the Aadhaar half involves a counter. We advise across all 75 districts, most often these:

Purvanchal and eastern UPVaranasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Jaunpur, Ballia, Deoria, Mirzapur, Basti, Ghazipur, Mau, Sonbhadra
Western UP and NCRNoida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Agra, Aligarh, Mathura, Bulandshahr, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Hapur, Firozabad
Rohilkhand and BundelkhandBareilly, Moradabad, Rampur, Shahjahanpur, Budaun, Pilibhit, Bijnor, Amroha, Jhansi, Banda, Mahoba, Chitrakoot
Awadh and central UPLucknow, Kanpur, Unnao, Raebareli, Sitapur, Hardoi, Barabanki, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Amethi, Bahraich

Enrolments made at early camps in smaller districts show this most, because a middle name or a father's name was often entered differently by two operators years apart. Our chamber is at Chamber No. 19, Sadar Tehsil, Sector 5, Gomti Nagar Vistar, Lucknow 226010, with the city guide on our Lucknow page. Call 9540003316 or WhatsApp 9540005002 from any district.

Key Terms on This Page

Plain definitions for the words that come up at the counter:

Aadhaar Seva Kendra
A government-run centre where Aadhaar details are updated in person, with an appointment.
Name correction
Fixing a name that was written wrongly by somebody else. Lighter than a change, because an older document already shows the right version.
Affidavit
A statement you swear is true, signed before a notary on stamp paper. The notary confirms you signed it, not that the contents are true.
Department of Publication
The office at Civil Line, Delhi that receives name change files and publishes the notification.
Name change
Adopting a different name from the one your documents correctly record. This is the case that usually needs publication.

Whichever counter you reach next, there is a guide for it here:

Why We Ask for Both Names in Writing

On a linking call we ask people to type out both names exactly as printed rather than describe them, because the difference is usually a space or a middle name and nobody notices it while speaking. Once we see the two strings, the answer is normally obvious and often costs a few hundred rupees. Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, checks the older documents before recommending which side to correct.

PAN and Aadhaar Name Mismatch: FAQs

Why does linking fail when both cards look the same?

The check compares the two names character by character. A middle name on one card only, an initial against an expanded name, or even an extra space is enough to stop it.

Which record should I correct?

The one that is actually wrong, not the one that is easier. Check your birth certificate, Class 10 marksheet and passport; the version most of them carry is the correct one.

Why is the PAN usually the cheaper side?

A PAN correction is done online, costs a small fee and can be repeated. An Aadhaar name update is a counter visit and spends one of only two you get for your whole life.

What is the commonest cause?

A middle name present on one card and absent on the other, followed by an initial on one and the expanded name on the other.

Can an affidavit fix the link?

No. A one-and-the-same affidavit is a bridge a bank or employer may accept while you wait, but the correction still has to be made.

Does my PAN number change?

No. Neither number changes; only the name printed on the record does.

What if it is my date of birth that differs?

Heavier, because Aadhaar allows a date update only once in a lifetime. Check the birth certificate first, since it is what both others copied from.

Can a gazette fix a linking failure?

No, and it is not needed. This is a mismatch rather than a name change, so nobody should be quoting you for publication.

I am changing my name properly. What order do I use?

Gazette, then Aadhaar, then PAN, then link. Doing PAN before Aadhaar makes the link fail for a new reason.

What happens if I never link them?

The PAN can be treated as inoperative, which affects filing returns, claiming refunds, deduction rates and some account operations.

How long does the fix take?

Days for an e-PAN after an online correction, and days to a few weeks for an Aadhaar update. Wait until it reflects before trying to link again.

What should I do first?

Write both names out exactly as printed, including spaces. The difference is usually visible within a minute, and it tells you what you are actually fixing.

Official Sources

Facts here are checked against these sources and our own casework. Fees, deadlines and portal behaviour are revised periodically and should be confirmed; the character-by-character nature of the check is the stable part.

About the founder: Founded by Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years of direct filing experience with the Department of Publication. Every process detail here comes from files we have actually prepared and followed through to publication, not from copied web content.

The Short Version

Linking compares the two names character by character rather than by meaning, so a middle name on one card only, an initial against an expanded name, or an invisible extra space is enough to stop it. Write both names out exactly as printed and the cause is usually obvious in a minute. Then comes the decision that matters: correct the record that is genuinely wrong rather than the one that is easier to change, because changing the correct card to match the incorrect one makes the error permanent. Your birth certificate and Class 10 marksheet settle which version is right. In most cases the PAN is the one to fix, since a PAN correction is online, cheap and unlimited, while an Aadhaar name update means a counter visit and spends one of only two you get for your whole life. Do not leave it unresolved, because an unlinked PAN can be treated as inoperative.

Send Us Both Names
