PAN and Aadhaar Name Mismatch Fix in Uttar Pradesh

The unhelpful part of this problem is the error message. It says the details do not match and stops there, so people begin guessing: maybe the date of birth, maybe the spelling, maybe the father's name. Almost always it is the name, and almost always the difference is small enough that a human reading both cards would not notice it. The system is not reading like a human.

Why It Failed

That is why the error feels absurd when you hold both cards and they look the same. Read them letter by letter, including the gaps, and the difference is usually obvious within a minute. Write both names out on paper exactly as printed before doing anything else.

Which Record Is Wrong

The decision the whole fix turns on, and people rush past it.

• If your marksheet and birth certificate agree with the PAN, the Aadhaar is the wrong one, whatever the inconvenience of fixing it.
• If they agree with the Aadhaar, correct the PAN, which is the easier case and also the commoner one.
• If your documents are split, you have a wider problem than linking, and it is worth resolving properly rather than patching one pair.
• After a marriage, the married name usually belongs on both, and the sequence is Aadhaar first then PAN.

Why the PAN Is Usually the Cheaper Side

That lifetime limit on Aadhaar is the reason we push people to check carefully. Spending one of two updates to fix a linking error, when the Aadhaar was correct all along and the PAN was wrong, is an expensive way to solve a cheap problem. Fixing It, Step by Step

1. Write both names out exactly as printed

   Letter by letter, including spaces. The difference is usually visible within a minute once you do this.

2. Check what your older documents say

   Birth certificate, Class 10 marksheet, passport. The version most of them carry is the correct one.

3. Correct whichever record is wrong

   PAN online through the official portal, or Aadhaar at a Seva Kendra if the PAN is the correct one.

4. Wait for the correction to reflect

   Days for an e-PAN, and days to a few weeks for Aadhaar. Do not attempt linking before it shows.

5. Try the link again

   On the income tax portal, once both records read identically.

6. Keep the corrected card and the old one

   Because the pair explains the history at any later verification.

When It Is the Date of Birth Instead

• Less common, and heavier, because a date update on Aadhaar is allowed only once in a lifetime rather than twice.
• Check the birth certificate first, since it is the record both others copied from and the one any office compares against.
• Correct the certificate before either card if it is the certificate that is wrong, because otherwise the mismatch simply reappears.
• A gazette cannot help with a date, at any stage, so nobody should be quoting one for this.

What Happens If You Leave It

So this belongs on the list of things worth finishing rather than tolerating. It is also among the cheapest problems on this website to solve, since in the common case it is one online correction and a fee of a few hundred rupees.

Central Gazette: the Complete Process and File Format

Stage 1: The affidavit

This is the one-and-the-same wording, not a name change declaration, and it is what a bank or an employer may ask for while the correction is being processed. It is a bridge rather than a fix, and the correction itself still has to be made.

Stage 2: The Public Notice, in two copies

Each witness gives signature, full name and address, and both sign both copies at one sitting.

Stage 3: The CD and CD-Certificate

Stage 4: Newspapers, fee, covering letter and dispatch

1. Publish in two newspapers and buy four copies

   One Hindi daily of your district and one English paper. Two copies of each edition, since the passport counter asks for complete pages later.

2. Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh

   Before the envelope is sealed, with the function head, PAO and DDO checked on the confirmation screen and two receipts printed.

3. Write the covering letter

   To The Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, saying the formalities are complete and the documents are enclosed, with your mobile number and email.

4. Assemble, check and photocopy

   Affidavit, Public Notice in two witnessed copies, CD with CD-Certificate, both newspaper pages, identity and address proof, photographs and the receipt.

5. Courier it, tracked

   One to three days from most UP districts, with no counter to visit.

6. Publish, download, then Aadhaar, then PAN

   Twenty-five to forty-five days, then the download, then Aadhaar, and PAN after it so the link succeeds first time.

Gazette Fees, Time and the File

The envelope in one line, where publication is genuinely needed: covering letter with your phone and email, affidavit (notarised), Public Notice typed in two copies with two witnesses on each, CD in MS-Word format with the signed CD-Certificate, both complete newspaper pages, photo identity proof, address proof, photographs and the BharatKosh receipt.

Before You Correct Anything: Check These

• Write both names out exactly as printed, including spaces.
• Check your birth certificate and marksheet to see which version is correct.
• Remember the Aadhaar name allowance is two for a lifetime.
• Do Aadhaar before PAN wherever a real name change is involved.

After the Gazette: What Updates Next

Once the link succeeds, check that your bank and employer records carry the same version, since they were often opened from whichever card was to hand. Keep the corrected card together with the older one, because the pair explains the change at any later verification and saves an argument.

What Other Websites Get Wrong

• Wrong: change whichever card is easier. Right: change the one that is actually wrong, or you make the error permanent.
• Wrong: Aadhaar can be updated freely. Right: two name updates for your whole life, so do not spend one carelessly.
• Wrong: the mismatch must be serious. Right: an extra space is enough to fail the check.
• Wrong: fix PAN first because it is quicker. Right: Aadhaar first where a real name change is involved, or the link fails again.
• Wrong: an affidavit fixes the link. Right: it is a bridge for a bank; the correction still has to be made.
