Quick answer: Start by listing which of your documents already carry your maiden name, because that is usually most of them. Your marksheets, degree and birth certificate were never updated for marriage, so they are still proof of the name you are returning to. For the records that did change, the decree plus those older documents is normally enough, and a gazette is needed less often than people are told. There is no time limit and no obligation to do this at all.
Two things worth saying at the start. This is entirely your choice, and plenty of women keep a married surname after a divorce for reasons that are nobody else's business. And if you do want your own name back, the paperwork is more manageable than it looks, because you are not asking anybody to accept something new.

What Already Carries Your Name
Education records are never updated for a marriage, which is correct and deliberate: a marksheet records that a person with a particular name passed an examination in a particular year, and that stays true forever. Most women find this pile is larger than they expected.
It changes the whole shape of the request. You are not asking a counter to accept a name nobody has seen. You are showing them a Class 10 marksheet with that name printed on it.
What the Decree Does, and Does Not
| The decree | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Establishes the divorce | Which is what explains why you are reverting now |
| Usually says nothing about names | Normal, and not a gap you need to fix |
| Is not itself proof of a name | Your older documents do that job |
| Is asked for by the passport office | Along with the older records |
| Should be kept permanently | Certified copies, since several counters want to see one |
People sometimes go back to a lawyer asking for a decree that mentions their name. That is rarely necessary. The pairing that works is decree plus older document: one shows the marriage ended, the other shows the name you held before it. Our divorce guide covers what to do where a counter asks for more.
Working Out Your Route
A surprising number of women in the first category call us anyway, because they assumed a divorce required paperwork. It does not, by itself. If you never changed your Aadhaar, there is genuinely nothing to do.
The Order to Update Things
Aadhaar first
With the decree and your Class 10 marksheet. Note that Aadhaar allows only two name updates in a lifetime, so if you used one at marriage this is likely your second.
PAN next
Because the linking compares the two, and doing PAN first creates a mismatch, as our mismatch page explains.
Bank and employer
Both follow Aadhaar and rarely add requirements of their own. These can be done in the same week.
Passport, if you hold one
A reissue with the decree and the older documents. This is the counter most likely to ask for the full set.
Everything else, in any order
Voter ID, driving licence, insurance, property records. None of these depend on each other.
Nothing at all for education records
They already say what you want them to say.
The Aadhaar limit is the one to check before starting, since it is the constraint people hit without warning. Our Aadhaar limit page sets out what happens when the updates are used up.
No Deadline, No Obligation
We mention this because women sometimes arrive believing they have missed a window, or that they are expected to revert and have been slow about it. Neither is true. The paperwork sits there and waits.
If You Have Children
- Your change does not affect their names, which stay as they are unless you apply separately for each of them.
- Their records will name you as recorded at admission, so a school register may show your married surname while your Aadhaar shows your maiden one.
- That difference is usually harmless and the decree explains it where anybody asks, which they rarely do.
- A child's surname is a separate question with its own considerations, on our minor name change guide.
- Some mothers update the parent field in school records so the two match; others leave it, and both are workable.
Worth deciding rather than discovering. School records are the place this surfaces, usually at an admission or a scholarship form, and knowing in advance means it is a note rather than a scramble.
Central Gazette: the Complete Process and File Format
Our core service: where a counter has refused the decree route, or where a given name is also changing, this is the filing as we run it from Lucknow.
Stage 1: The affidavit
Note the words resumed my former name rather than "changed my name to". That is accurate and it reads better, because it tells the reader you are returning to something documented rather than choosing something new. Clause one naming your marksheet is what makes that verifiable.
Stage 2: The Public Notice, in two copies
Full names on both sides, never just a surname. The notice uses D/O rather than W/O, which is both accurate and says less. Each witness gives signature, full name and address, and both sign both copies at one sitting.
Stage 3: The CD and CD-Certificate
Stage 4: Newspapers, fee, covering letter and dispatch
Publish in two newspapers and buy four copies
One Hindi daily of your district and one English paper, complete original pages.
Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh
With the function head, PAO and DDO checked and two receipts printed.
Write the covering letter
To The Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, with your mobile number and email.
Assemble, check and photocopy
Including a decree copy and your Class 10 marksheet, which support the file.
Courier it, tracked
One to three days from most UP districts, with no counter to visit.
Search Part IV after 25 to 45 days
By full name, then download and print about five copies.
Try the Decree Route First
Aadhaar is usually the right counter to test with, because it is the one everything else follows. Women who try this first frequently find the whole thing resolves without publication, which is the outcome we would want for anybody.
Gazette Fees, Time and the File
| Decree route | Often nothing beyond certified copies |
| Affidavit | Rs 100 to 500 including stamp paper and notary |
| Adult gazette fee | Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh |
| Newspaper advertisements | A few hundred rupees per paper, plus spare copies |
| Aadhaar update | A nominal Kendra fee; watch the two-update limit |
| Publication window | 25 to 45 days after the Department receives the file |
| Our service | Basic from Rs 999, Complete from Rs 1,999, quoted separately |
The envelope in one line: covering letter with your phone and email, affidavit (notarised), Public Notice typed in two copies with two witnesses on each, CD in MS-Word format with the signed CD-Certificate, both complete newspaper pages, decree copy, photo identity proof, address proof, photographs and the BharatKosh receipt.
Before You Start: Check These
- Sort your documents into the two piles first; the first pile is your evidence.
- Check how many Aadhaar name updates you have already used.
- Try one counter with the decree and marksheet before paying for anything.
- Keep certified copies of the decree permanently.
After the Gazette: What Updates Next
Aadhaar first, then PAN, bank and employer, then the passport, then anything else in whatever order suits you. Education records need nothing at all. Keep the decree, your Class 10 marksheet and the gazette together, because that combination answers any question about your name for the rest of your life.
What Other Websites Get Wrong
- Wrong: reverting always needs a gazette. Right: the decree with an older document works at most counters.
- Wrong: the decree must mention your name. Right: most do not, and that is normal.
- Wrong: get your marksheet updated too. Right: it already carries your maiden name, which is the point.
- Wrong: there is a time limit after the decree. Right: there is none, at any distance.
- Wrong: you are expected to revert. Right: keeping a married surname is an ordinary and complete choice.

Women who have moved back to a home district after a divorce sometimes find their bank and employer records sit elsewhere, which is manageable but worth planning as one trip rather than three. We handle these discreetly and we do not ask about the divorce beyond the decree date. Our chamber is at Chamber No. 19, Sadar Tehsil, Sector 5, Gomti Nagar Vistar, Lucknow 226010, with the city guide on our Lucknow page. Call 9540003316 or WhatsApp 9540005002 from any district.

Why We Ask What Your Marksheet Says
Our first question is what your Class 10 marksheet carries, because for most women it already carries the name they want back, and that changes the whole conversation from proving something to showing something. A fair number of callers turn out to need no filing at all. Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, sorts the two piles before quoting anything.
- We start from what you already hold: which is usually more than you expect.
- We suggest testing one counter first: before any fee is spent.
- We check your Aadhaar update count: since it is the constraint people hit unwarned.
- We do not ask why: in either direction, and nor should any counter.

Reverting to Your Maiden Name: FAQs
Do I need a gazette to go back to my maiden name?
Often not. Your older documents already carry that name, and the decree explains why you are reverting, which most counters accept together.
Which documents already have my maiden name?
Your Class 10 and 12 marksheets, your degree and your birth certificate. Education records are never updated for a marriage.
My decree does not mention my name. Is that a problem?
No, and most do not. The decree establishes the divorce; your older documents establish the name. The pair works together.
Is there a time limit after the divorce?
No. You can do this whenever you are ready, including years later. The paperwork waits.
Do I have to revert at all?
No. Keeping a married surname is an ordinary and complete choice, and nobody at any counter is entitled to ask why in either direction.
What if I never changed my documents after marrying?
Then there is nothing to revert. Your records already carry your name and you are finished.
What should I do first?
Try one counter, usually Aadhaar, with the decree and your Class 10 marksheet. If they accept it, every other counter likely will too, and you have spent nothing.
What if that counter refuses?
Ask for the reason in writing. That tells you whether the problem is a rule or a missing document, and only one of those needs publication.
What order do I update things in?
Aadhaar first, then PAN, then bank and employer, then the passport. Education records need nothing.
Is there a limit on Aadhaar name changes?
Yes, two in a lifetime. If you used one when you married, this is likely your second, so check before starting.
Does this change my children's names?
No. Theirs stay as they are unless you apply separately, and their school records will still name you as recorded at admission.
What should I keep permanently?
Certified copies of the decree, your Class 10 marksheet, and the gazette if you file one. Together they answer any question about your name.

Facts here are checked against these sources and our own casework across the state. Counter practice varies; the fact that education records retain a maiden name is the stable part.
The Short Version
You are not taking a new name, which is the part that makes this easier than it looks. Your Class 10 marksheet, your degree and your birth certificate were never updated for your marriage and still carry your maiden name, so you are returning to something your own oldest documents already show. Sort your papers into two piles: the ones that never changed, which are your evidence, and the ones you updated after marrying, which are your work list. Then try one counter, usually Aadhaar, with the decree and your marksheet, because if they accept it every other counter probably will and you have spent nothing. A gazette is needed less often than people are told. There is no deadline at any distance from the divorce, and there is no obligation to do this at all.
