Demat Account Name Change After Marriage in Uttar Pradesh

You have married, changed your name, and the demat account still shows the old one. Before you contact your broker, know how this record actually works. A demat account does not hold a name of its own. It was opened against your PAN, and the name it displays is borrowed from there. So the work is upstream, and going to the broker first is the commonest wasted step in this whole area.

Quick answer: Update PAN first, then submit a KYC modification through your broker or depository participant with the marriage certificate, the gazette where you have one, and updated Aadhaar. The demat account displays a name borrowed from PAN, so a request made before PAN is updated goes nowhere. The good news is that securities KYC is centralised, so one properly filed update reaches several institutions rather than needing a separate visit to each.

This is one of the few places on this subject where the system is genuinely joined up, and knowing that changes how much work this actually is.

A Borrowed Name

Ask where each record's name comes from: marksheet from a school register Aadhaar from your enrolment licence from your application Khatauni from the revenue chain policy from the proposal form DEMAT ACCOUNT from your PAN That last one is different in kind. The others hold a name. A demat account holds a POINTER to a name held somewhere else. Which means the account cannot disagree with PAN for long, and cannot be corrected while PAN still says the old thing. Every wasted trip in this area comes from not knowing that.

Brokers explain this on the phone constantly, and it lands better if you already understand why they are refusing to help yet rather than being unhelpful.

The Order That Works

  1. Update Aadhaar with the new name and address

Since PAN correction will be checked against it, and this is the base of everything.

  2. Update PAN

The anchor identity for anything in securities, and the source the demat account reads from.

  3. Update the bank account

Because dividends and sale proceeds land there and the mandate has to match.

  4. File the KYC modification

Through your broker or depository participant, with the marriage certificate and gazette.

  5. Check the account after a few weeks

The displayed name should have followed, and the bank mandate with it.

  6. Then review the nominee

Which was probably set when the account was opened and is worth a second look now.

PAN and Aadhaar agreeing with each other is the step everything else rests on, covered on our PAN and Aadhaar page.

The One Joined-Up System

Elsewhere on this subjectIn securities
Property: four separate recordsKYC is held centrally
RTO: two portals, one officeOne modification propagates
Insurance: each branch separatelyIntermediaries read the same record
Certificates: apply afresh each timeUpdate once, correctly
This is worth saying clearly because most of this site is a list of separate errands. Securities KYC was deliberately centralised, so a properly filed modification is picked up by the institutions that rely on it, rather than each one needing its own visit. It is not instant and it is not magic. Some places still want their own form. But of all the after-marriage jobs, this is the one where the effort per outcome is lowest, and it is worth doing early for exactly that reason.

Who Is Actually Involved

You deal with the first one. The rest happen behind it, which is why a single well-prepared submission does more here than the same effort spent anywhere else on this list.

What to Fix Alongside

While the file is open, four things: BANK MANDATE new account or new name on the old one, so proceeds land somewhere valid ADDRESS almost always changed, and rarely mentioned NOMINEE set when the account was opened, quite possibly before you married CONTACT DETAILS the number and email statements go to None of these is the name change. All of them are wrong for the same reason, and the same submission usually carries them.

The nominee question is worth its own thought rather than a quick answer, and our nominee page sets out why that field ages differently from everything else.

Your Holdings Do Not Change

People occasionally worry that touching a demat account will disturb holdings or create a tax question. It will not. This is a label being corrected on an account that continues unchanged.

Central Gazette: the Complete Process and File Format

Our core service: securities intermediaries ask for the gazette more often than most, so this is the route from Lucknow.

Stage 1: The affidavit

AFFIDAVIT (on non-judicial stamp paper, notarised) I, ____________________ W/O ____________________ , R/o ____________________________________________________ , do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:- 1- That my maiden name was ____________________ , as recorded in PAN ____________________ and in Demat Account (DP ID / Client ID) ____________________ . 2- That I was married to ____________________ on __-__-____ , and have since changed my name to ____________________ . 3- That ____________________ and ____________________ are the name of one and the same person, that is, myself. 4- That there has been no transfer, sale or change of beneficial ownership of the securities held in the said account. 5- That it is my true and correct statement. DEPONENT VERIFICATION:- Verified at ____________ on this __-__-20__ that the contents of the above Affidavit are true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. DEPONENT

Point four belongs specifically on a securities affidavit. Saying on oath that beneficial ownership has not changed keeps this filed as an account update rather than raising any question about a transfer, and it costs nothing to include.

Stage 2: The Public Notice, in two copies

PUBLIC NOTICE (TWO identical typed copies, each signed and witnessed) It is for general information that I, ____________________ W/O ____________________ , R/o ______________________________ ____________________________________ , declare that I have changed my name from ____________________ to ____________________ and I shall hereafter be known as ____________________ for all purposes. It is certified that I have complied with other legal requirements in this connection. ____________________ Signature of Applicant WITNESS NO. 1 Signature :- ____________________ Full Name :- ____________________ Address :- ____________________ WITNESS NO. 2 Signature :- ____________________ Full Name :- ____________________ Address :- ____________________

Each witness gives signature, full name and address, and both sign both copies at one sitting.

Stage 3: The CD and CD-Certificate

CD-CERTIFICATE I, ____________________ W/O ____________________ , R/o ____________________________________________________ , do hereby declare:- 1- That the matter in CD and hard copy is the same and I am responsible for any mismatch. 2- That I am responsible for the quality of CD. 3- That the CD is in MS-Word Format. 4- That the above statement is true and correct. Signature of Applicant ____________________ R/o ____________________

Stage 4: Newspapers, fee, covering letter and dispatch

  1. Publish in two newspapers and buy four copies

One Hindi daily of your district and one English paper, complete original pages.

  2. Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh

With the function head, PAO and DDO checked and two receipts printed.

  3. Write the covering letter

To The Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, with your mobile number and email.

  4. Assemble, check and photocopy

A full copy set kept at home.

  5. Courier it, tracked

One to three days from most UP districts.

  6. Then Aadhaar, PAN, bank, then the KYC modification

In that order, since each one reads the one before it.

Do This One Early

A reasonable way to think about the after-marriage list: HIGH EFFORT, ONE OUTCOME driving licence, property records, each insurance branch HIGH EFFORT, MANY OUTCOMES Aadhaar, PAN MODEST EFFORT, MANY OUTCOMES securities KYC The last row is unusual and it sits right after PAN in the sequence. So once Aadhaar and PAN are done, this is arguably the next thing to do rather than something to leave for later, simply because it clears several institutions at once. Most people put it last because shares feel complicated. The paperwork is not.

Households with a demat account, a few mutual funds and a bank account often find that three of those settle from one properly filed update.

Before You Contact the Broker: Check These

After the Gazette: What Updates Next

Aadhaar, PAN, bank, then the KYC modification, then a look at the nominee. Keep the gazette and affidavit with your account papers, since securities intermediaries ask for them more often than most and you will produce them again.

Key Terms on This Page

Plain definitions for the words that come up at the counter:

Khatauni
The land record listing who holds an agricultural plot. Corrections go through the Tehsil.
Name correction
Fixing a name that was written wrongly by somebody else. Lighter than a change, because an older document already shows the right version.
Department of Publication
The office at Civil Line, Delhi that receives name change files and publishes the notification.
Name change
Adopting a different name from the one your documents correctly record. This is the case that usually needs publication.

Whichever counter you reach next, there is a guide for it here:

Why We Send People to PAN First

Somebody calls about a demat account and we ask whether PAN has been updated. Almost always it has not, and almost always they have already spoken to their broker and come away confused. The broker was not being difficult; they simply cannot correct a name their system reads from somewhere else. Understanding that turns a frustrating week into a straightforward sequence. Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, works upstream first.

Demat Name Change After Marriage: FAQs

Why can't my broker just change the name?

Because a demat account does not hold a name of its own. It was opened against your PAN and displays what PAN says.

So what do I do first?

Update Aadhaar, then PAN. Only after that does a KYC modification through the broker make sense.

Do I have to update every intermediary separately?

Usually not. Securities KYC is centralised, so a properly filed modification is picked up by institutions that rely on it.

Will my shares be affected?

No. Nothing is sold, bought or moved, the account number stays the same, and no tax event occurs.

What documents does the broker want?

The marriage certificate, updated PAN and Aadhaar, a gazette where you have one, and a cancelled cheque for the bank mandate.

Do securities need a gazette?

Intermediaries here ask for it more often than most, so take it if you have published.

What else should I update at the same time?

The bank mandate, your address, the nominee and your contact details. All four are wrong for the same reason.

Where should this sit in my list?

Right after PAN. It is the low-effort, high-coverage item, and most people wrongly leave it until last.

My bank account is still in my maiden name.

Sort that alongside, since sale proceeds and dividends land there and the mandate has to match.

How long does it take?

Weeks, once PAN is done. Almost all the waiting is upstream rather than at the broker.

What about mutual funds held outside demat?

Those sit with fund houses and their registrars, and are worth checking separately even though the KYC update helps.

I am keeping my maiden name. Anything to do?

No name change, though the address and nominee may still need updating if either has changed.

Official Sources

Facts here are checked against these sources and our own casework. Brokers and depository participants differ in forms and timelines, so follow the current instructions of the one holding your account.

The Short Version

Ask where each record's name comes from and a demat account turns out to be different in kind from the rest. A marksheet holds a name from a school register, Aadhaar from your enrolment, a policy from a proposal form. A demat account holds a pointer to your PAN, which means it cannot disagree with PAN for long and cannot be corrected while PAN still says the old thing. That is why contacting the broker first is the commonest wasted step here, and why they are not being difficult when they decline. The compensation is real: securities KYC was deliberately centralised, so one properly filed modification is picked up by the institutions relying on it rather than each needing its own visit. Of everything on an after-marriage list, this is the item with the lowest effort per outcome, and it belongs right after PAN rather than last.
