Quick answer: Take both numbers to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra and report it yourself. UIDAI verifies the biometrics and decides which number stays active; the other is cancelled and never reissued to anybody. Before you go, work out which name is on each, because the surviving one becomes your reference and everything else will have to be brought into line with it. Do not simply keep using one and ignore the other.
This sounds alarming and is not. It is a tidy-up, and it is far better done by you than discovered by a bank.

How Anybody Ends Up With Two
The two-stage check, and the scale of the clean-up since, is documented: as of the middle of 2022 the government had reported that close to six lakh Aadhaar had been cancelled as duplicates or for other reasons.

Which Name Is Left Standing
- The name on the surviving number becomes your working identity, because every later verification runs against it.
- If that is the version matching your Class 10 marksheet, you are fortunate, and there is very little left to do.
- If it is the other version, you have a choice: update the Aadhaar name to match the marksheet, or correct other records instead.
- Updating the Aadhaar is almost always the better direction, since the marksheet is what employers and examiners measure against.
- Remember there are limits on how often a name can be updated in Aadhaar, so do it once, correctly, rather than twice.

What Has to Be Re-Pointed
Make the list before the cancellation, not after
Bank accounts, provident fund, SIM cards, ration card, pension or scheme registrations, and anything else seeded to either number.
Note which number each one uses
Some will be on the surviving number and need nothing. Others will be on the one about to go.
After the cancellation, update those one at a time
Each with its own office, its own form and its own timeline.
Start with the bank
Because scheme payments and provident fund claims both run through it, and a broken link there stops money.
Then the provident fund and any scheme registration
Which verify against Aadhaar and will fail quietly rather than loudly.
Then everything else, and keep the acknowledgments
So that if something surfaces in a year you can show what was done and when.

Report It Rather Than Wait
- Going in yourself is a correction, and it is treated as one.
- Being discovered elsewhere is a discrepancy, and it arrives attached to whatever application uncovered it.
- The clean-up is ongoing, so a duplicate that has survived so far is not safe indefinitely.
- The visit is in person, with biometrics, so it cannot be done online or by somebody on your behalf.
- Take both numbers, both names and your list, and expect to be told there which one is retained.
And When Somebody Dies
- An Aadhaar number should be deactivated after a death, to prevent it being used for benefits or anything else.
- The family reports it, on the myAadhaar portal, once the death certificate has been obtained from the registering authority.
- Large scale deactivation is already under way, with the authority reporting that over two crore numbers of deceased persons have been deactivated.
- A deactivated number is never reassigned, so there is no risk of it passing to somebody else.
- Do this alongside the other papers after a death, rather than as a separate errand months later.

What Is Local in Amroha
- The district was carved out of Moradabad in 1997, so papers older than that may name Moradabad and are correct for their date.
- It sits in the Moradabad division, which is where escalation above the district goes.

Central Gazette: the Complete Process and File Format
A gazette does not resolve a duplicate. That is a UIDAI matter. The gazette applies where, once the dust settles, a name genuinely has to change.
Stage 1: The affidavit
Points two, three and four exist for one reason: to let you explain a cancelled number to a bank or an employer in one document, honestly, including that you reported it yourself and hold no other. That is a far better position than answering the question verbally at a counter.
Stage 2: The Public Notice, in two copies
Only where a name is genuinely changing, and only after the duplicate is resolved. Each witness gives signature, full name and address, and both sign both copies.

Where a gazette is genuinely needed, the envelope is: covering letter with your phone and email, affidavit (notarised), Public Notice typed in two copies with two witnesses on each, CD in MS-Word format with the signed CD-Certificate, both complete newspaper pages, photo identity proof, address proof, photographs and the BharatKosh receipt.

Why We Tell People to Go In Themselves
When somebody discovers they have two Aadhaar numbers, the first instinct is often to hide the second one and hope. We say the opposite, and we say it early: report it at a Seva Kendra yourself, because going in voluntarily is treated as a correction and being found out elsewhere is treated as a discrepancy. That is not work we can do for anybody, since it needs the person and their biometrics, and we say that plainly rather than charging for a visit we cannot make. What we do is prepare the list of records that will need re-pointing afterwards, and the affidavit that explains a cancelled number in one document to any bank or employer who asks. The Short Version
Nobody sets out to have two Aadhaar numbers. A camp comes to the village school in 2012 and the child is enrolled with the name the school register uses; four years later the family goes to a centre in town and somebody enrols again with the name used at home, a different spelling, a different photograph and older fingerprints. The system is meant to catch that and it catches the great majority, but biometrics change as people age and a small proportion slipped through in the early years. Only one number can survive, because the policy is one person and one Aadhaar, and you do not get to choose which; that is decided on the biometric record, and the other is cancelled and never given to anybody else.
