Name Change in Rampur

If your name appears three different ways across your documents, there is a reason for it here that has nothing to do with carelessness. In this district a great many names were first written in another script, Urdu most often, and also Gurmukhi or Bengali. Each time a clerk copied one into Hindi or English, they made a reasonable choice, and different clerks made different reasonable choices. The result is several spellings and no error by anybody.

Quick answer: Where a name crossed from one script into another, the different spellings across your documents are variants, not mistakes. That usually means you need one affidavit saying they are all the same person, rather than five separate corrections. Decide one final spelling, use it everywhere from now on, and correct only the document where something is actually stuck. Locally, Rampur has a Nagar Palika Parishad rather than a Nagar Nigam.

This is one of the most common problems in the district and one of the least well explained.

When a Name Crosses Scripts

In this district a large share of names were first written in a script other than the one on the form in front of you. Urdu, most often Gurmukhi in parts of Bilaspur and Suar Bengali in some families Now think about what happens next. A clerk reads the name in the original script and writes it into Hindi or English. There is no single official way to do that. There is only the clerk's ear and judgement. one writes it one way in 1996 another writes it differently in 2004 a third does something else in 2013 Each of them did their job properly. And you now hold three documents with three spellings of one name.

This is a different situation from a typing error, and it needs a different answer, which is where most advice goes wrong.

Nobody Made a Mistake

A typing errorA script variant
Somebody got it wrongEverybody got it reasonably
There is a correct versionSeveral versions are defensible
Fix it at that officeLink them with an affidavit
One document is faultyNo document is faulty
Common examples, and none of them is an error: Mohammad Mohd Muhammad Rahman Rehman Siddiqui Siddiqi Siddique Firoz Feroz Firoze Nisar Nissar Zia Ziya Ask which one is right and there is no answer, because the original was not written in these letters at all. Ask which one is YOURS and there is an answer, and only you can give it. That is the whole shift this page is asking you to make. Stop looking for the correct spelling. Start choosing your spelling.

The Abbreviation Problem

The general version of this, for any two names across documents, is on our two names page.

One Affidavit, Not Five Corrections

  1. List every spelling exactly as each document has it

On one sheet, with the document name beside each. Do not tidy anything up while copying.

  2. Count how many distinct versions there really are

Usually two or three, not the five or six it feels like.

  3. Choose the one you will keep

Most people choose whatever their Class 10 marksheet says, because that is what offices lean on.

  4. Get an affidavit naming all of them

Stating that every listed version refers to one and the same person, and which is correct going forward.

  5. Then look at where you are actually stuck

Usually one office, one document. That is the only one that may need correcting.

  6. Leave the rest alone

They have worked for years and will keep working, now with the affidavit behind them.

The arithmetic, plainly: FIVE CORRECTIONS five offices five fees five waits months, sometimes years ONE AFFIDAVIT one notary a few hundred rupees one afternoon And in most cases the second does the job of the first. Not always. Where a document is genuinely wrong, correct it. But where the difference is a script variant, correction is not even the right word for what you are asking.

Choosing the Final Spelling

Where you genuinely want a different name rather than a settled spelling, that is a change and needs the gazette, which is set out below.

What Is Local in Rampur

Worth noting because every other city page on this site says something different: RAMPUR NAGAR PALIKA PARISHAD a Nagar Palika, not a Nagar Nigam which registers births and deaths for the city, while Nagar Panchayats and gram panchayats cover the rest of the district The district has five tehsils, including Milak, Bilaspur, Suar and Shahabad, each with its own arrangements for land and revenue records. Rampur sits in the Moradabad division, so anything that escalates goes that way. And the rest is as everywhere: notaries and typists near the court, newspapers with a district edition, an Aadhaar centre in town.

The district-split question that affects the neighbouring districts of this division is on our Moradabad page.

Central Gazette: the Complete Process and File Format

Read this only if the name genuinely changed. For script variants an affidavit is usually enough, and paying for a gazette you do not need is the commonest waste of money in this district.

Stage 1: The affidavit

AFFIDAVIT (on non-judicial stamp paper, notarised) I, ____________________ S/O ____________________ , R/o ____________________________________________________ , District Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:- 1- That my name is recorded as ____________________ in my High School marksheet, Roll No. ____________________ . 2- That my name is also recorded as ____________________ in ____________________ , and as ____________________ in ____________________ , and as ____________________ in ____________________ . 3- That all the said names refer to one and the same person, that is, myself, and that my correct name is ____________________ . 4- That it is my true and correct statement. DEPONENT VERIFICATION:- Verified at Rampur on this __-__-20__ that the contents of the above Affidavit are true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. DEPONENT

Point two is the important one and it is written wider here than on other pages: list every variant with the document it appears on. Point three then declares them one person and names the version you are keeping. This single page is what replaces five separate applications.

Stage 2: The Public Notice, in two copies

PUBLIC NOTICE (TWO identical typed copies, each signed and witnessed) It is for general information that I, ____________________ S/O ____________________ , R/o ______________________________ ____________________________________ , declare that I have changed my name from ____________________ to ____________________ and I shall hereafter be known as ____________________ for all purposes. It is certified that I have complied with other legal requirements in this connection. ____________________ Signature of Applicant WITNESS NO. 1 Signature :- ____________________ Full Name :- ____________________ Address :- ____________________ WITNESS NO. 2 Signature :- ____________________ Full Name :- ____________________ Address :- ____________________

This is only prepared where the name is genuinely changing. Two identical copies, each with two witnesses giving signature, full name and address.

Stage 3: The CD and CD-Certificate

CD-CERTIFICATE I, ____________________ S/O ____________________ , R/o ____________________________________________________ , do hereby declare:- 1- That the matter in CD and hard copy is the same and I am responsible for any mismatch. 2- That I am responsible for the quality of CD. 3- That the CD is in MS-Word Format. 4- That the above statement is true and correct. Signature of Applicant ____________________ R/o ____________________

Stage 4: Newspapers, fee, covering letter and dispatch

  1. Publish in two newspapers and buy six copies

A Hindi daily and an English paper covering this district, complete original pages.

  2. Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh

    Online, with two receipts printed.

  3. Write the covering letter

To The Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, with your mobile number and email.

  4. Assemble, check and photocopy

A full copy set kept at home.

  5. Courier it, tracked

A day or two from Rampur to Delhi.

  6. Then Aadhaar, and outwards from there

    Everything else compares against it.

Make the List Before You Decide Anything

One sheet of paper, one column per document. Marksheet, class 10 ______________ Marksheet, class 12 ______________ Birth certificate ______________ Aadhaar ______________ PAN ______________ Bank passbook ______________ Ration card ______________ Voter list ______________ Copy each one EXACTLY, letter for letter, including full stops and shortened forms. Resist correcting anything as you write. Two things happen when people do this. First, the number of genuinely different versions is smaller than they feared. Often two. Second, one version turns out to appear on most of the documents already, which usually makes the choice for them. Ten minutes with a pen. It decides the entire plan and it costs nothing.

Gazette Fees, Time and the File

Affidavit aloneRs 100 to 500, one day
Adult gazette feeRs 1,100, if genuinely needed
Minor gazette feeRs 1,700
NewspapersA few hundred rupees per paper
Courier to DelhiA couple of hundred rupees
Gazette timelineRoughly 25 to 45 days
Our serviceBasic from Rs 999, Complete from Rs 1,999, quoted separately

Notice the top line. For a script variant the whole cost can be one affidavit, and that is worth trying before anything larger.

Before You Spend Anything: Check These

After the Affidavit: What Happens Next

Keep several copies, because you will hand one over at each office that asks. Use your chosen spelling on every new form from now on. And if a particular office insists on a correction rather than accepting the affidavit, do that one correction, not all of them.

Key Terms on This Page

Plain definitions for the words that come up at the counter:

Affidavit
A statement you swear is true, signed before a notary on stamp paper. The notary confirms you signed it, not that the contents are true.
Notary Public
An officer who attests that a document was signed in front of them. They verify the signature, not the facts written above it.
Department of Publication
The office at Civil Line, Delhi that receives name change files and publishes the notification.
Name correction
Fixing a name that was written wrongly by somebody else. Lighter than a change, because an older document already shows the right version.
Name change
Adopting a different name from the one your documents correctly record. This is the case that usually needs publication.
One and the same person
The wording used when two documents show different versions of one person's name and you need to link them formally.

Whichever counter you reach next, there is a guide for it here:

Why We Ask for the List First

People from this district often arrive believing something has gone badly wrong with their papers, and sometimes believing it is their own fault. Our first request is the list: every spelling, exactly as each document has it. Almost always the number of genuinely different versions turns out to be two, and one of them already appears on most of the documents. At that point the answer is usually a single affidavit rather than a stack of applications, and we say so even though it is the smaller job. What we will not do is sell a gazette to somebody whose name never actually changed. Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, asks for the list before anything else.

Name Change in Rampur: FAQs

Why is my name spelled differently on each document?

Because it was first written in another script, and each clerk who copied it into Hindi or English made their own reasonable choice.

So who made the mistake?

Nobody. That is what makes this different from a typing error, and why the answer is different too.

Which spelling is the correct one?

There is no correct one, because the original was not written in these letters. There is only the one you choose to keep.

Should I correct all my documents to match?

Usually not. One affidavit stating that all the versions are the same person does the work of five corrections.

Do I need a gazette for this?

Usually not, and paying for one you do not need is the commonest waste of money here. The gazette is for a genuine change of name.

What should the affidavit list?

Every variant with the document it appears on, and then a line saying they are all one person and which version is correct going forward.

A counter asked whether two forms of my name are the same person.

That is a fair question, not an accusation, and the affidavit answers it in one line.

Which version should I choose?

Most people take whatever their Class 10 marksheet says, because that is the document other offices measure against.

What if one office refuses the affidavit?

Then correct that one document. Do not correct the others; they have been working for years.

How do I stop the list growing?

Use your chosen spelling on every new form from today, and tell your family which one it is.

Does Rampur have a Nagar Nigam?

No. It has a Nagar Palika Parishad, which registers births and deaths for the city.

What does this cost?

For a script variant, often just one affidavit at Rs 100 to 500. A gazette, if genuinely needed, is Rs 1,100 plus newspapers.

Official Sources

Facts here are checked against these sources and our own casework in the Rohilkhand districts. What a particular office will accept can vary, so ask at the counter where you are actually stuck before preparing anything.

About the founder: Founded by Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 5+ years of direct filing experience with the Department of Publication. Every process detail here comes from files we have actually prepared and followed through to publication, not from copied web content.

The Short Version

If your name appears three different ways across your documents, there is a reason for it in this district that has nothing to do with carelessness. A great many names here were first written in another script, Urdu most often, and also Gurmukhi or Bengali in particular families and tehsils. Every time a clerk copied one of those names into Hindi or English they made a reasonable choice, and different clerks made different reasonable choices, years apart. So you now hold three documents with three spellings and nobody made a mistake. That matters because it changes the answer. A typing error gets corrected at the office that made it; a script variant gets linked instead, by one affidavit stating that all the listed versions are the same person and naming the one you are keeping. One notary, a few hundred rupees, one afternoon, in place of five offices and five waits. Start by listing every spelling exactly as printed, because most people discover there are only two.

Three Spellings, One Person?

List them exactly as each document has them. That list is what the affidavit is built from.
