Quick answer: Accept the split rather than fighting it. Your birth entry and school records stay in the district you grew up in, permanently, and no application moves them. Everything made after marriage belongs to the district you live in now. What connects the two halves is not a transfer, it is your name, established once through an affidavit and, where needed, the gazette. Make one written list of which district holds what, and keep it for life.
Barabanki touches seven other districts, so this affects almost every married woman here.

The Split, and Why It Is Permanent
The full sequence of what to update after marriage is on our after marriage page.
Which Half Holds What
| Stays in the maiden district | Belongs to the current district |
|---|---|
| Birth certificate | Ration card |
| Class 10 and 12 marksheets | Voter entry |
| School leaving certificate | Property and tenancy papers |
| Caste certificate | Domicile for present residence |
| Any degree, at that university | Local certificates from now on |
This is set out in detail on our caste certificate after marriage page.
You Cannot Transfer a Record
- There is no application that moves a birth entry from one district to another, and there is not meant to be.
- A school does not forward your record to a school near your husband's home, because it is not a school you attended.
- Making a second birth certificate in the new district is not a solution, it creates two records for one person and that is a far bigger problem.
- An updated Aadhaar address does not relocate anything, however convincing the new card looks.
- So the correct approach is not relocation but connection, which is what the affidavit does.
Why a second registration is genuinely dangerous rather than merely untidy is explained on our birth certificate page.
What Actually Links the Two Halves
Decide the name you will use from now on
Whether that is your maiden name kept unchanged or a new surname, decide once and stop revisiting it.
Establish it properly, once
An affidavit where the change is small, and the gazette where the name genuinely changed.
Keep the marriage certificate with it
It is the document that explains why two names belong to one person.
Update Aadhaar next
Because almost every other office compares against it, in both districts.
Then update the new-district records
Ration card, voter entry, bank, and anything local.
Leave the maiden-district records in the old name
Unless something is genuinely blocked. They are historical records and they are allowed to be historical.
The List Worth Keeping For Life
What Is Local in Barabanki
- The district has six tehsils, Nawabganj, Fatehpur, Ram Sanehi Ghat, Haidergarh, Ram Nagar and Sirauli Ghauspur.
- Barabanki town is served by the Nagar Palika Parishad at Nawabganj, on Station Road, which registers births and deaths for the town.
- Around nine in ten people here live outside a town, so most births in this district were registered by a gram panchayat.
- The district sits in the Ayodhya division, so anything above district level goes that way rather than to Lucknow.
- Board corrections go through your own school and then the DIOS, which for a married woman usually means her maiden district.
The renaming that made this the Ayodhya division is covered on our Ayodhya page.
Central Gazette: the Complete Process and File Format
This is what connects the two halves. One notification, valid in both districts and everywhere else, which is why it does the job no transfer application could.
Stage 1: The affidavit
Two things here appear on no other page of this site. Point one names which district holds the old record, and point two states the marriage date. Together they let any office in either district see the whole picture at once, which is exactly what a split file needs.
Stage 2: The Public Notice, in two copies
Each witness gives signature, full name and address, and both sign both copies. Family members from either district are entirely acceptable.
Stage 3: The CD and CD-Certificate
Stage 4: Newspapers, fee, covering letter and dispatch
Publish in two newspapers and buy six copies
A Hindi daily and an English paper covering where you live now, complete original pages.
Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh
Online, with two receipts printed.
Write the covering letter
To The Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, with your mobile number and email.
Assemble, check and photocopy
A full copy set kept at home, because the file sent is never returned.
Courier it, tracked
A day or two from here to Delhi.
Then Aadhaar, then the new-district records
In that order, and leave the maiden-district half alone.
Do It Before the Records Multiply
Gazette Fees, Time and the File
| Adult gazette fee | Rs 1,100 |
| Affidavit | Rs 100 to 500 including stamp paper and notary |
| Newspapers | A few hundred rupees per paper |
| Courier to Delhi | A couple of hundred rupees |
| Timeline | Roughly 25 to 45 days |
| Cost of transferring old records | Not possible at any price |
| Our service | Basic from Rs 999, Complete from Rs 1,999, quoted separately |
The envelope in one line: covering letter with your phone and email, affidavit (notarised), Public Notice typed in two copies with two witnesses on each, CD in MS-Word format with the signed CD-Certificate, both complete newspaper pages, photo identity proof, address proof, photographs and the BharatKosh receipt.
Before You Start: Check These
- Have you accepted that the old half stays where it is?
- Have you decided the name you will use from now on?
- Is anything actually blocked, or does it only look untidy?
- Have you written the two-column list yet?
After the Gazette: What Updates Next
Aadhaar, then the bank, then the ration card and voter entry in this district. Keep the gazette, the affidavit, the marriage certificate and the two-column list together in one envelope, and tell somebody where it is.
What Other Websites Get Wrong
- Wrong: get your old records transferred to your new district. Right: there is no such application, and there is not meant to be.
- Wrong: a marksheet in your maiden name is a mismatch. Right: it records who sat that examination, under the name she had then.
- Wrong: make a fresh birth certificate where you live now. Right: that creates two records for one person, which is far worse.
- Wrong: the caste certificate changes on marriage. Right: it follows birth, and only the name on it may change.
- Wrong: both halves must eventually match. Right: they must be connected, not identical.

Within the district we work across all six tehsils, and papers reach us by photograph rather than by anybody travelling. Our chamber is at Chamber No. 19, Sadar Tehsil, Sector 5, Gomti Nagar Vistar, Lucknow 226010, and the wider picture is on our districts page. Call 9540003316 or WhatsApp 9540005002.
Key Terms on This Page
Plain definitions for the words that come up at the counter:
- Affidavit
- A statement you swear is true, signed before a notary on stamp paper. The notary confirms you signed it, not that the contents are true.
- Department of Publication
- The office at Civil Line, Delhi that receives name change files and publishes the notification.
- Name correction
- Fixing a name that was written wrongly by somebody else. Lighter than a change, because an older document already shows the right version.
- Name change
- Adopting a different name from the one your documents correctly record. This is the case that usually needs publication.
- DIOS
- The District Inspector of Schools, the officer a board correction is escalated to when a school will not forward it.

Why We Tell People to Stop Trying to Merge Them
Married women from this district often arrive convinced something has gone wrong because their school certificate belongs to one district and their ration card to another. Our first job is usually to say that nothing has gone wrong. The two halves were never meant to sit in one place, no office expects them to, and there is no application that would move them even if you wanted it. What is worth doing is settling the name once, properly, so that both halves are connected, and writing down which district holds what so that nobody has to work it out again in twenty years. That is a smaller job than most people expect and it lasts a lifetime. Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, starts by explaining what is not broken.
- We explain what is not broken first: usually most of it.
- We name the maiden district on the affidavit: so both halves are visible at once.
- We refuse to chase transfers that do not exist: however often people ask.
- We ask families to write the two-column list: and to keep it.

Name Change in Barabanki: FAQs
My school records are in another district. Can they be transferred here?
No. There is no application that moves a record between districts, and there is not meant to be.
Is it a problem that my papers are in two districts?
No. That is the normal result of marrying across a district line, and no office is surprised by it.
My marksheet is in my maiden name. Is that a mismatch?
No. It records who sat that examination under the name she had then, which is exactly its purpose.
Then how do the two halves connect?
Through your name, established once by affidavit and, where the name genuinely changed, by the gazette.
Should I make a new birth certificate here?
No. That creates two records for one person, which is a much bigger problem than the one you are solving.
Does my caste certificate change after marriage?
No. It follows birth and stays with your maiden district. Only the name on it may change in time.
What should I update, and in what order?
Name settled first, then Aadhaar, then the bank, ration card and voter entry in this district.
And the maiden-district records?
Leave them unless something is genuinely blocked. They are historical records and are allowed to remain so.
When is the best time to do this?
Early. Every year after marriage adds documents in whichever name was in use, and each one is another thing to explain later.
What list should I keep?
Two columns, maiden district and current district, with the number on each document, plus the linking papers. Keep it for life.
Where do births get registered in this district?
Around nine in ten people here live outside a town, so usually a gram panchayat. In Barabanki town it is the Nagar Palika Parishad at Nawabganj.
Which division does Barabanki come under?
The Ayodhya division, so escalation above district level goes that way rather than to Lucknow.

Facts here are checked against these sources and our own casework in the Ayodhya division. Requirements differ between districts, so confirm with the office actually holding the record concerned.
The Short Version
Barabanki borders seven other districts, so marriages here cross a district line as a matter of routine, and when they do a woman's papers split into two permanent halves. Her birth entry, her school and board records and her caste certificate stay in the district she grew up in, for the rest of her life. Her ration card, voter entry and property papers belong to the district she lives in now. Nothing in the system is designed to merge those two, they were never meant to be in one place, and no office is surprised to find them apart. That matters because a great many people believe the split itself is the problem and spend years trying to close a gap that is not a gap. There is no application that moves a birth entry between districts, and making a second one where you live now creates two records for one person, which is far worse. What connects the halves is not a transfer. It is your name, settled once, properly, and written down.
