Name Change in Ayodhya

If a document of yours says Faizabad, do not assume it is out of date. The change here did not happen once; it happened in layers, over several years. The municipal body changed in 2017, the district and division in 2018, the railway station in 2021. And some things still carry the name Faizabad today, including the parliamentary constituency and the city itself, which sits about seven kilometres from Ayodhya.

Quick answer: Look at the year on the document before deciding anything. The district and division became Ayodhya in November 2018, the municipal body had already become Ayodhya Nagar Nigam in 2017, and the railway station changed in 2021. Meanwhile Faizabad city still exists and the parliamentary constituency is still called Faizabad. So a paper carrying that name is very often correct, and needs nothing done to it.

Elsewhere a name changed once. Here it changed in stages, and that is a different problem.

It Changed in Layers

Most renamings are a single event. This one was a sequence. 2017 the municipal side becomes Ayodhya Nagar Nigam, covering both towns 2018 in November, the district and the division are renamed Ayodhya 2021 the railway station becomes Ayodhya Cantt later the cantonment is renamed too Four dates, four different things, spread across several years. Which means there is no single moment before which everything said Faizabad and after which everything said Ayodhya. A document from 2019 might say either, depending on what issued it and which layer that body belonged to. Both would be correct.

Compare this with the simpler case, where a whole city changed on one date, set out on our Prayagraj page.

Faizabad Is Still a Live Name

Still called FaizabadNow called Ayodhya
The parliamentary constituencyThe district
Faizabad city, as a placeThe division
Older signage and recordsThe municipal corporation
Habit and daily speechThe railway station
This is the part that catches people, and it is not true of Prayagraj at all. Faizabad did not disappear. It is still a city on the map, about seven kilometres from Ayodhya, and the two have long been described as twin towns on the Saryu. So when somebody writes Faizabad on a form today, they may be naming: the district, using the old name the city, using the current name the constituency, correctly Only the first of those is out of date. Which is why "your paper says Faizabad" is not, by itself, a problem statement. It is just a name that is still in use.

Read the Year, Not the Name

  1. Find the year the document was issued

This is the single most useful thing on the page and it takes a second.

  2. Note what body issued it

A municipal body, a school, a tehsil, the railway. Each belongs to a different layer with its own date.

  3. If the year is before that layer changed, it is correct

Nothing to fix, nothing to explain, nothing to pay for.

  4. If it is after, it is probably still fine

Records are not reissued because a name changed, and offices know this.

  5. Use the current name on anything new

Which for the district means Ayodhya.

  6. And leave your old documents alone

They describe what was true when they were made, which is exactly their job.

The same discipline applies wherever a map has moved, which on this site now covers a city, a district, a state and this sequence, all set out on our Saharanpur page and our Moradabad page.

If a Counter Queries It

Worth being clear about what you are NOT doing here. You are not changing your name. You are not correcting a record. You are not proving anything. You are explaining a date. That distinction matters because the moment you start treating it as a problem, it becomes one: applications get filed, affidavits get sworn, money gets spent, and at the end of it the certificate still says Faizabad, because it always will. It is supposed to.

What Is Local in Ayodhya

Which six things are local in any UP district is set out on our districts page.

What Is Not Local At All

Regardless of which name anything carries: THE CENTRAL GAZETTE one Delhi office, by post from here exactly as from anywhere THE AFFIDAVIT same wording, any notary THE FEE Rs 1,100 for an adult THE TIMELINE roughly 25 to 45 days AADHAAR, PAN, BANK, PASSPORT national, all of them None of these was affected by any of the renamings, at any layer. Your name and the district's name are two entirely separate matters, and it is worth keeping them apart in your own mind before you walk into any office.

Central Gazette: the Complete Process and File Format

This is for changing your own name, not for anything to do with the district's. If your only question is Faizabad versus Ayodhya, you do not need this at all.

Stage 1: The affidavit

AFFIDAVIT (on non-judicial stamp paper, notarised) I, ____________________ S/O ____________________ , R/o ____________________________________________________ , District Ayodhya (formerly Faizabad), Uttar Pradesh, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under:- 1- That my name is recorded as ____________________ in my High School marksheet, Roll No. ____________________ , issued by ____________________ Board in the year ______ . 2- That I have changed my name from ____________________ to ____________________ and I shall hereafter be known as ____________________ for all purposes. 3- That both the said names are the name of one and the same person, that is, myself. 4- That it is my true and correct statement. DEPONENT VERIFICATION:- Verified at ____________ on this __-__-20__ that the contents of the above Affidavit are true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. DEPONENT

One small thing here that appears on no other page: the district line is written as Ayodhya (formerly Faizabad). Where a person's older documents carry one name and the affidavit carries the other, that bracket quietly connects them, and it costs nothing to include.

Stage 2: The Public Notice, in two copies

PUBLIC NOTICE (TWO identical typed copies, each signed and witnessed) It is for general information that I, ____________________ S/O ____________________ , R/o ______________________________ ____________________________________ , declare that I have changed my name from ____________________ to ____________________ and I shall hereafter be known as ____________________ for all purposes. It is certified that I have complied with other legal requirements in this connection. ____________________ Signature of Applicant WITNESS NO. 1 Signature :- ____________________ Full Name :- ____________________ Address :- ____________________ WITNESS NO. 2 Signature :- ____________________ Full Name :- ____________________ Address :- ____________________

Each witness gives signature, full name and address, and both sign both copies. Neighbours are entirely acceptable.

Stage 3: The CD and CD-Certificate

CD-CERTIFICATE I, ____________________ S/O ____________________ , R/o ____________________________________________________ , do hereby declare:- 1- That the matter in CD and hard copy is the same and I am responsible for any mismatch. 2- That I am responsible for the quality of CD. 3- That the CD is in MS-Word Format. 4- That the above statement is true and correct. Signature of Applicant ____________________ R/o ____________________

Stage 4: Newspapers, fee, covering letter and dispatch

  1. Publish in two newspapers and buy six copies

A Hindi daily and an English paper covering this district, complete original pages.

  2. Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh

    Online, with two receipts printed.

  3. Write the covering letter

To The Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, with your mobile number and email.

  4. Assemble, check and photocopy

A full copy set kept at home, because the file sent is never returned.

  5. Courier it, tracked

A day or two from here to Delhi.

  6. Then Aadhaar, and outwards from there

    Everything else compares against it.

Write the Dates on a Card

If you deal with paperwork for your family, this is worth keeping somewhere. 2017 Ayodhya Nagar Nigam 2018 district and division renamed 2021 railway station renamed later cantonment renamed still Faizabad: the parliamentary constituency the city itself Four lines. And with them you can answer, in about ten seconds, whether any document in the house is out of date. Almost always the answer is that it is not. Older relatives find this particularly useful, because they are the ones most often told that their papers have become invalid, which is rarely true.

Gazette Fees, Time and the File

Adult gazette feeRs 1,100
Minor gazette feeRs 1,700
AffidavitRs 100 to 500 including stamp paper and notary
NewspapersA few hundred rupees per paper
Courier to DelhiA couple of hundred rupees
TimelineRoughly 25 to 45 days
Cost of the Faizabad questionNothing, if handled correctly

The envelope in one line: covering letter with your phone and email, affidavit (notarised), Public Notice typed in two copies with two witnesses on each, CD in MS-Word format with the signed CD-Certificate, both complete newspaper pages, photo identity proof, address proof, photographs and the BharatKosh receipt.

After the Gazette: What Updates Next

Aadhaar, then PAN, then the bank, then any district record. Use the current district name on everything new, and leave every older document exactly as it is.

Why Our Answer Here Is Usually Nothing

More enquiries from this district are about the place name than about anybody's own name, and for almost all of them the honest answer is that nothing needs doing. People have been told their certificate has become invalid because it says Faizabad, and they arrive expecting to pay for a correction. We ask for the year, explain which layer changed when, and send them away without a bill. Where somebody genuinely does want to change their own name we handle that properly, and we keep the two questions apart, because mixing them is how people end up paying for a gazette that had nothing to do with their problem. Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, asks for the year first.

Name Change in Ayodhya: FAQs

My certificate says Faizabad. Is it invalid?

Almost certainly not. The change happened in layers across several years, and Faizabad is still a current name for some things.

When did the district become Ayodhya?

In November 2018, along with the division.

And the municipal body?

Earlier, in 2017, when the two municipalities were merged into Ayodhya Nagar Nigam.

What about the railway station?

Later, in 2021, when Faizabad Junction became Ayodhya Cantt, and the cantonment was renamed after that.

Does Faizabad still exist?

Yes. It is still a city, about seven kilometres from Ayodhya, and the parliamentary constituency still carries the name.

So a 2019 document could say either?

Yes, depending on what issued it and which layer that body belonged to. Both would be correct.

Should I get an affidavit to explain it?

No. Nothing is wrong, and offering an affidavit implies something is.

What if a counter still queries it?

Say the year first. The date explains the name faster than any argument, and staff are adjusting to this too.

Should I get my old certificates reissued?

No. Records are not reissued because a name changed, and they describe what was true when they were made.

Which name do I use on new forms?

The current one, which for the district is Ayodhya.

Can the gazette settle this?

No. The gazette concerns your own name, not the district's, and the two should be kept apart.

Who registers births here?

Ayodhya Nagar Nigam for the municipal area, with Palikas, Panchayats and gram panchayats covering the rest of the district.

The Short Version

Most renamings are a single event, and this one was not. The municipal side became Ayodhya Nagar Nigam in 2017 when the two municipalities were merged, the district and the division were renamed in November 2018, the railway station became Ayodhya Cantt in 2021, and the cantonment changed after that. Four dates, four different things, spread across several years, which means there is no single moment before which everything said Faizabad and after which everything said Ayodhya. A document from 2019 might carry either name depending on what issued it, and both would be correct. On top of that, Faizabad did not disappear the way Allahabad did. It is still a city about seven kilometres from Ayodhya, and the parliamentary constituency is still called Faizabad. So a paper carrying that name is not, by itself, a problem. Read the year and the issuing body, and then in almost every case do nothing at all.

Paper Says Faizabad?

Send us the year on it. That alone usually tells you whether anything needs doing, and often nothing does.
