Quick answer: Take the marriage certificate, the gazette where you have one, Aadhaar in the new name and your Class 10 marksheet to the servicing branch, and have your policies endorsed. Then do the two nobody mentions: ask your parents whether you are named as a nominee on their policies, since that entry now carries a name you no longer use, and read your own nomination, which was probably made before you married.
The policy in your own name is the easy part of this and the part every website covers. The rest of this page is about the two that actually decide something.

Key Takeaways
- A wedding touches three insurance entries, not one.
- Two of them sit in your parents' file, not yours.
- Your own nomination was probably made before you married.
- Nothing forces any of this, so it waits for years.
- One conversation covers all three.

Three Things, Two Households
The reason is simple enough: the first is hers to do and the other two involve asking somebody else. That does not make them less important, and on the day a claim is made they are the two that matter.
Your Own Policy
- Update Aadhaar first, with the new name and the new address, since the insurer compares against it.
- Go to the servicing branch, which is printed on the policy and may be in your parents' district.
- Take the marriage certificate and the gazette, since branches differ on which they ask for.
- Take the Class 10 marksheet too, because it carries the maiden name that the policy shows.
- Ask for the address to be updated as well, which has almost certainly changed and rarely gets mentioned.
The endorsement itself, and why the policy is not reissued, is on our endorsement page.
Your Parents' Policies
| What the policy says | What is true now |
|---|---|
| Nominee: her maiden name | She uses a married name |
| Address: the family home | She lives elsewhere |
| Relationship: daughter | Still correct |
| Contact details: an old number | Often changed too |
Why a nominee entry ages this way, and the difference between correcting it and replacing the person, is on our nominee page.
Who You Have Named
Read your existing nomination
Which was probably filled in when the policy was bought, possibly by an agent, possibly years ago.
Expect it to name a parent
That is the usual answer for somebody unmarried at the time.
Decide whether that is still what you want
Which is your decision alone and needs nobody's permission.
Keeping a parent named is an ordinary choice
As is naming a husband, and neither requires explaining on the form.
Do it in the same visit as the endorsement
Since you are already at the branch with the policy in hand.
And know it can be changed again later
A nomination is not a one-time act, whatever it felt like at the time.
We put this as a decision rather than a recommendation deliberately. Families sometimes assume there is a right answer here, and there is not one; there is only what the policyholder wants.
Having the Conversation
Parents are usually glad to be asked, in our experience. The reluctance is nearly always on the daughter's side, and it is worth pushing past.
Why It Waits for Years
- Nothing refuses, unlike a bank that eventually asks for KYC or a PAN that fails at linking.
- Premiums keep being paid under whichever name the policy shows, and nobody queries it.
- Two of the three jobs are in somebody else's custody, so they are not on your list at all.
- And insurance is the subject families avoid, which keeps it off the conversation for another year.
- So it drifts until a claim, which is precisely when it becomes difficult to fix.
The same absence of pressure explains why a driving licence gets left, covered on our licence after marriage page. The difference is where the consequence lands.
Central Gazette: the Complete Process and File Format
Our core service: a marriage name change is exactly what publication is for, and several insurers ask for it. Here is the whole route from Lucknow.
Stage 1: The affidavit
Point four is unusual and it is the reason this affidavit is worth drafting properly. Naming the parent's policy in the same document means one sworn statement serves both branches, which saves a second affidavit and a second notary visit.
Stage 2: The Public Notice, in two copies
Each witness gives signature, full name and address, and both sign both copies at one sitting. Family members are commonly chosen and perfectly acceptable.
Stage 3: The CD and CD-Certificate
Stage 4: Newspapers, fee, covering letter and dispatch
Publish in two newspapers and buy four copies
One Hindi daily of your district and one English paper, complete original pages. Buy extras, since two branches may each want a set.
Pay Rs 1,100 on BharatKosh
With the function head, PAO and DDO checked and two receipts printed.
Write the covering letter
To The Controller, Publication Department, Civil Line, Delhi 110054, with your mobile number and email.
Assemble, check and photocopy
A full copy set kept at home and a second set for your parents' branch.
Courier it, tracked
One to three days from most UP districts.
Then Aadhaar, then both branches
Yours and theirs, with the same document set.
Write the Three Down
Households that do all three in one month tend to be the ones who wrote them down. There is nothing cleverer to it than that.
Gazette Fees, Time and the File
| Endorsement on your policy | The insurer's charge, usually small |
| Nominee correction on theirs | Usually small or nominal |
| Fresh nomination on yours | Usually free or nominal |
| Adult gazette fee | Rs 1,100 |
| Newspapers | A few hundred rupees per paper, buy extras |
| Affidavit covering both policies | Rs 100 to 500 including stamp paper and notary |
| Our service | Basic from Rs 999, Complete from Rs 1,999, quoted separately |
The envelope in one line: covering letter with your phone and email, affidavit (notarised), Public Notice typed in two copies with two witnesses on each, CD in MS-Word format with the signed CD-Certificate, both complete newspaper pages, photo identity proof, address proof, photographs and the BharatKosh receipt.
Before You Start: Check These
- Is Aadhaar updated with the new name and address?
- Have you asked your parents whether you are named on their policies?
- Have you read your own nomination?
- Do you have enough newspaper copies for two branches?
After the Gazette: What Updates Next
Aadhaar and PAN, then the bank, then your own policies, then your parents' policies. Keep the affidavit permanently, because it names both and will be the document that explains this whole sequence to anybody reading it later.
What Other Websites Get Wrong
- Wrong: update the policy in your name. Right: that is one of three things a wedding touches.
- Wrong: your parents' policies are their business. Right: your name is on them, and it is now the wrong one.
- Wrong: your own nomination is fine. Right: it was probably made before you married and is worth reading.
- Wrong: there is a correct person to nominate. Right: a parent and a husband are both ordinary choices, and it is yours.
- Wrong: get to it eventually. Right: nothing will ever force it, so it waits until a claim.
Areas We Serve in Uttar Pradesh
Two servicing branches are usually involved: yours and your parents'. Across all 75 districts, most often these:
| Awadh and central UP | Lucknow, Kanpur, Unnao, Raebareli, Sitapur, Hardoi, Barabanki, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Amethi, Bahraich |
| Purvanchal and eastern UP | Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Jaunpur, Ballia, Deoria, Mirzapur, Basti, Ghazipur, Mau, Sonbhadra |

| Rohilkhand and Bundelkhand | Bareilly, Moradabad, Rampur, Shahjahanpur, Budaun, Pilibhit, Bijnor, Amroha, Jhansi, Banda, Mahoba, Chitrakoot |
Marriages between districts make this harder than it needs to be, since her policy sits with one branch and her parents' with another, and the same document set has to reach both. Our chamber is at Chamber No. 19, Sadar Tehsil, Sector 5, Gomti Nagar Vistar, Lucknow 226010, with the city guide on our Lucknow page. Call 9540003316 or WhatsApp 9540005002 from any district.
Key Terms on This Page
Plain definitions for the words that come up at the counter:
- Endorsement
- A change recorded on an existing insurance policy rather than a fresh policy being issued.
- Notary Public
- An officer who attests that a document was signed in front of them. They verify the signature, not the facts written above it.
- Affidavit
- A statement you swear is true, signed before a notary on stamp paper. The notary confirms you signed it, not that the contents are true.
- Name correction
- Fixing a name that was written wrongly by somebody else. Lighter than a change, because an older document already shows the right version.
- Department of Publication
- The office at Civil Line, Delhi that receives name change files and publishes the notification.
- Name change
- Adopting a different name from the one your documents correctly record. This is the case that usually needs publication.

Why We Ask About Your Parents' Policies
A newly married woman calls about the policy in her own name and we ask a question she was not expecting: are you a nominee on anything of your parents'. Almost always the answer is yes and almost always nobody has thought about it. That entry now names a woman under a surname she does not use, at an address she has left, and it will be read carefully on the worst possible day. One phone call home fixes it. Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, asks about the policies you do not own.
- We ask about all three: not just the one in your name.
- We draft one affidavit covering both policies: which saves a second notary visit.
- We treat the nomination as your decision: and do not suggest an answer.
- We tell people to write the three down: because two of them get forgotten otherwise.

LIC After Marriage: FAQs
How many things does a wedding touch here?
Three: your name on your own policies, your name as nominee on your parents' policies, and who you have named on yours.
Why do my parents' policies matter?
Because you are very often the nominee on them, and that entry now carries a surname you no longer use and an address you have left.
Who makes that correction?
Your parents, as the policyholders, at their servicing branch, using your current details.
What about my own nomination?
It was probably made before you married and likely names a parent. Read it and decide, which is entirely your call.
Should I name my husband instead?
That is an ordinary choice and so is keeping a parent named. There is no right answer, only the one you want.
What do I take to my own branch?
The original policy, marriage certificate, gazette where you have one, Aadhaar in the new name and your Class 10 marksheet.
Should I update the address too?
Yes, and it rarely gets mentioned. It has almost certainly changed and an insurer that cannot reach you is its own small problem.
Do I need a gazette?
Not always, but several insurers ask for it and it settles the question, so take it if you have published.
Can one affidavit cover both policies?
Yes, and it should. Naming your parent's policy in the same document saves a second affidavit and a second notary visit.
Why does this get left for years?
Because nothing refuses. Premiums keep being paid, nobody queries the name, and two of the three jobs sit in somebody else's custody.
How do I raise it with my parents?
Attach it to your own paperwork and mention it as one more form rather than as a separate conversation. Practical lands better than solemn.
What if I am keeping my maiden name?
Then nothing needs correcting on any of the three, though your own nomination is still worth reading.
Official Sources
- Life insurer servicing practice for endorsement of policy particulars and change of nomination.
- Insurance law provisions governing nomination under a life policy.
- Marriage registration practice in Uttar Pradesh, under which a certificate is issued.
- Department of Publication requirements for gazette notification of a name change.
Facts here are checked against these sources and our own casework across the state. Insurers differ in forms and charges, so each servicing branch takes precedence over anything on this page.
The Short Version
Trace what a wedding actually does to insurance paperwork and it is three things across two households, not one. Her own policy now carries a name she does not use, which is the part every guide covers. Her parents' policies almost certainly name her as nominee under her maiden name, at an address she has left, on a number that may no longer work, so an insurer paying a claim years from now would be looking for a woman who is hard to find. And her own nomination was probably filled in before she married and likely names a parent, which may still be exactly what she wants or may not be. The first job is hers to do and the other two require asking somebody else, which is the whole reason they wait. Write all three down on the same list as the bank and the PAN, and one phone call home covers the hardest of them.
